Garrett talks healthcare and reading the bill

by: Jason Springer

Mon Aug 17, 2009 at 01:30:00 PM EDT

H/t to Blog the Fifth for catching this:
Representative Scott Garrett and Representative Anthony Weiner sat down on Fox 5's morning show to discuss the health care debate. One of the important things they discussed was whether or not Congress actually will read all 1,000 of the bill.

Garrett, for his part, has put his money where his mouth is on this one, signing up to co-sponsor H. Res. 554. I've written before about the "Read the Bill" campaign, and I'm really happy to see Garrett on board.

And here's the video of the exchange:

Weiner called Garrett out on the government getting in the way of patients and their doctors asking if he opposed Medicare. Garrett responded talking about the sustainability of the program.

It becomes obvious (0.00 / 0)
that this effort will take longer. But it doesn't have to mean that what we want gets weakened.  We can take this time to press for single payer still and a public option or "medicare for all". We can DEMAND that our legislators actually read the bill.

I cannot believe that legislators don't read the things they vote on. As a former councilwoman, I read EVERY single thing that I had to vote on.  And BEFORE I walked in the chambers too.  Voting without knowing what you are voting on is falling down on the job.

If it is that damn hard to read 1000 pages, then perhaps they should try shortening the bill and making it plain English as much as possible.  If the legislators can't be bothered to read what they are voting on, then we are in serious trouble indeed.

We need to take time to make sure the healthcare industry which DOES have an army of lawyers not afraid of READING isn't sneaking stuff in there for themselves.  Unless the guys on our side read the whole thing, we'll NEVER get reform.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.
