Steve Audubato breaks down the LG Choices

by: Jason Springer

Tue Jul 28, 2009 at 01:15:00 PM EDT

Chris Daggett announced his running mate yesterday on the steps of the capital in Trenton. Steve Audubato appeared on NJN news last night to analyze the choices for Lieutenant Governor, now that all three candidates have made their selections. In short, he says Chris Daggett is a decent guy, but he and his choice are very close to irrelevant in this race. On Corzine's selection of Weinberg, he says she wasn't his first choice, but that she is a first class Senator that has fought the party bosses who will be a very energetic campaigner. He's changed his mind on Chris Chrisitie now thinking "he knew what he was doing" in the wake of last weeks news:

What do you think of Audubato's analysis?

Did Chris Christie know? (0.00 / 0)
What was going down in his old office?

How was his timing, that he picked another prosecutor as LG?

Mere coincidence?

What do honest folks think?

Conventional wisdom might have called for a different kind of balance for his ticket, perhaps.

I think conventional wisdom is usually wrong... (0.00 / 0)
look at Clinton-Gore in 1992, everyone thought he was nuts for picking another Southerner and that worked out for them.

Did Christie know about the cases? Probably, but to what extent and the timing, probably not.

Some of these cases were just made as of 2 and 3 months ago, so he couldn't have been privy to the timing of the arrests.

Clearly, his campaign them is - Trenton outsider/prosecutor (cleaning up corruption)/ family values, and the Monmouth County Sheriff reinforces all of that.

I disagree (4.00 / 1)
I think Senator Weinberg was Governor Corzine's best and only choice all along. I think he understood that there would be great internal opposition from the entrenched bosses, who successively proposed anyone except her, quickly jumping to the latest flavor of the moment. In actuality, I see the Democrats not so much as a party, but as a coalition of interests. The county machines are really quite conservative without much commitment to ideology of any kind, because they are job machines. This is what makes them so conservative as they seek to preserve the status quo (usually a pay check for themselves, friends and relatives). To some degree, Corzine had to navigate around and through their demands during his first term, producing some very muddled compromises, especially in the realm of ethics reform and environmentalism. But in a second term, he will be much freer of their orbits. I think that's why he chose Weinberg, to bare the soul of the party, which is deeply hidden by the beholden bureacracy from the failed McGreevey administration. Look for more new faces if Corzine-Weinberg win, because I think they will finally bring the change that the status quo badly needs.
