Why Won't Rush Holt Sponsor His Own Bills?

by: Juan Melli

Fri Apr 07, 2006 at 10:47:55 AM EDT

An email I just received from MoveOn titled "Protect voting machines: Call Rep. Holt":
Congress should know they represent millions of Americans in every state and every county who want voter-verified paper records of every vote. Congressman Rush Holt, who represents you in the House, hasn't signed onto this crucial legislation to protect our votes.

Please call Rep. Holt and ask him to co-sponsor H.R. 550 to require a paper record of every vote.

Except, Rush Holt wrote the bill and is already the primary sponsor. Oops.

UPDATE: MoveOn has sent out an email correcting themselves (below).

Juan Melli :: Why Won't Rush Holt Sponsor His Own Bills?
Dear MoveOn member,

Due to a glitch, we sent you an email asking you to call Congressman Rush Holt and urge him to co-sponsor H.R. 550 to require a paper record of every vote. We sent this email to everyone whose representative hasn't co-sponsored H.R. 550.

Unfortunately, Rep. Holt can't co-sponsor H.R. 550. Why? Rep. Holt is the one who introduced this crucial legislation in the House! He's the author of the bill and one of the biggest champions of paper records we have.

Rep. Holt has been fighting hard for a voter-verified paper record for years. He's a hero on election reform. We made a mistake by asking you to call him.

If you'd like, you can thank Rep. Holt for standing up and fighting for this common sense bill to secure our voting machines:

Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for all you do.

Nice, very nice (0.00 / 0)
That's a pretty stupid mistake from the MoveOn people.  I unsubscribed from their email because they send too much of it.  Now I find they send wrong information as well.

in MoveOn's defense (0.00 / 0)
They probably just forgot to remove his name from the list. It's not SUCH a big deal. On the positive side, their phonebanking software is great.  They're surveying voters in CA-50th, Cunninham's district, where Francine Busby is running in a special election on Tuesday.  All you need is a computer and a phone and you can call from anywhere in the country, without having to work off a list.  After you've clicked through the screen the number is gone, so you're not sitting around with all those phone numbers in your computer or with a hard copy.  Maybe others had seen it before, but I hadn't and thought it worked remarkably well.

I think it's a big deal (0.00 / 0)
The reason I think it's such a big deal is that they have a huge mailing list.  So, where were they when some of us were trying to get signatures for Congressman Holt's petition in support of HR 550?  Nowhere.  But now, months after some of us put in hours and hours in support of HR 550, they show up and make a mistake like that.  Had it not been caught in time, it could have swamped the congressman's staff with phone calls.  Like I said, they have a huge list.  Who knows how many calls they Holt's staff had to deal with in the meantime.

I also, as I said, found them very annoying because of the number of emails they send out to the people on their list, which is why I unsubscribed.  I get enough unsolicited email; I don't need two a day from MoveOn, mainly asking me for money.

However, I will forgive them if they now email their list and ask their members to sign Congressman Holt's petition in support of HR 550, and include a link to the petition in their email to make it easy.

Unfair criticism (0.00 / 0)
MoveOn has been drumming up support for HR 550 for months, if not years. They have even organized meetings with members of Congress to encourage them to sign on to HR 550. I still have some of the emails to prove it.

That was my mistake then (0.00 / 0)
My apologies for implying that MoveOn was not involved in supporting HR 550, though I believe I remain technically correct regarding Congressman Holt's petition.

But whoever wrote that memo should have known about Congressman Holt being the primary sponsor.  Look, I know it was a mistake on their part and not malicious, but I think my point about the problem such a mistake causes is valid.  If I write something in error here in comments, maybe a few people read it and the effect is very limited.  MoveOn has a very large mailing list and their errors have wider repercussions.  I think it is a big deal.

Um, by the way, and I don't mean this in a snotty way, if they supported HR 550, then it wasn't for "years" since HR 550 was introduced in February of 2005, I believe.  I was blogging on its predecessor, HR 2139, also introduced by Congressman Holt, long before that.  The numerous verified voting organizations have likewise been around for a while and thank goodness for that, since they have had much success on the state level.

Holts bills needs modification (0.00 / 0)
It hands the running of Elections to the Feds. Just look at HAVA to see that in the hands of the wrong folks, HAVA has become a cash cow for the 3 voting machine vendors, ES&S Diebold & Sequoia.
