The Choice is Clear

by: Paul Aronsohn

Sat Jul 18, 2009 at 08:54:17 AM EDT

Promoted by Jason Springer: Another week, with plenty of discussion about who the runningmate for Jon Corzine might be, but still no announcement. Do you agree with Paul's take or do you have another school of thought?

Let's cut to the chase:  The Democrat's choice for Lieutenant Governor should be Loretta Weinberg.  She has the experience.  She has the record.  And she has the passion, temperament, and fortitude to rise to this historic occasion.

In other words, Loretta Weinberg has what it takes to be a great running mate and a great second-in-command -- a fact even privately acknowledged by some of her most public critics.

Paul Aronsohn :: The Choice is Clear
Granted, there have been many fine people under consideration by the Corzine campaign, but none fits the bill better than Loretta Weinberg.

--  Politically, she would bring to the Governor's campaign a great deal of diversity as a Jewish senior woman.

--  Geographically, she would bring to the Governor's campaign a great many votes as a popular legislator from the most populous county in the state.

--  Substantively, she would bring to the Governor's office years of solid experience -- in local, county and state government --  and a proven track record of effective leadership.

Loretta Weinberg is, in a word (or three), the complete package.

So, for the sake of his campaign ... for the sake of all Democratic candidates, particularly those running in Bergen County ... and for the sake of all New Jerseyans who want and deserve good, effective, representative government, I genuinely hope that Governor Corzine chooses Loretta Weinberg as his running mate.

After all, for many reasons, the choice is clear.

very well said (3.50 / 2)
All of the reasons you cite are very good ones - unfortunately, the political one is the one that is most important due to the sense of urgency and the importance of GOTV in Bergen.

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

Loretta the Lionhearted (3.67 / 3)
This is the Godmother of Progressive New Jersey. The reformer who doesn't back down when party bosses tell her to shut the hell up and sit down (ask Joe Ferriero). The warm and funny, keenly reformist woman with a track record and a rock-star following.

I live a world away from Bergen in the sleepy burg of Flemington, Paul, but that's my Senator as much as if I lived in Teaneck.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

I will even take her (4.00 / 1)
I did notwant Weinberg , but now ,with the real possibility that Corzine might take that Apprentice guy I will GLADLY take Weinberg as the alternative.

Either Corzine has the best political group ever assembled and they know something that no one else knows about the appeal of Mr. Apprentice or they and he are as dumb as a bag of rocks.

He picks Trumps guy and it is time to concentrate on saving as many Assembly seats as possible.

I'm crossing my fingers for Loretta (4.00 / 1)
and I'm praying like crazy that Corzine pulls this one out.

No lack of Loretta fans here. (4.00 / 1)

thanks but no thanks (0.00 / 0)
maybe it's clear for you Paul, being a North Jersey guy and having the Governor, the LtGov and both Senators from your neighborhood, but for those of us who don't share your riches the choice is perhaps not so clear.

personally I LOVE having Loretta in the Senate being the progressive Grand Dame of the upper house.  if that arrangement doesn't change, i won't be sorry.

Jay, I Understand And Appreciate Your.... (3.00 / 1)
.....geographic concerns.

However, this is the time to put the geography of where we stand on the issues ahead of where we stand on the zip code map.

I know you Jay Lassiter.   I know that you are a good and decent progressive fellow.   I know that you would be very disappointed to be living in New Jersey under heavy heel of a Christie administration.

If Governor Corzine were to pick Rob Andrews for LG, I would snap to attention and salute the choice!   If he were to pick Jay Lassiter I would be surprised, but wildly enthusiastic!

The bottom line is that it is painfully clear that a Pinkett choice would be a virtually certain recipie for disaster.....and that, at this point, Loretta Weinberg makes good sense for all the sensible reasons that our good friend Paul Aronsohn raises herein.

I heartily agree, Paul (0.00 / 0)
For the latest Loretta-in-the-News articles - see my latest diary.  I am not exactly up to speed blogging yet, but I would LOVE to see her as Lt. Gov and will try my best to keep you guys informed....

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.
