Newt to the Rescue

by: Jason Springer

Fri Jul 10, 2009 at 08:29:39 PM EDT

With New Jersey being one of only two states with off year elections, you can expect many of the big names to come through the state.  While the Governor will have the President in on Thursday and the Christie campaign will have Michael Steele on Monday, Jay Webber has turned the party to a familiar name:
GOP State Committee Chairman Jay Webber confirmed Friday that Gingrich will headline a July 24 event at the home of Sal and Lisa LoBiondo, a Montville couple who are active in Republican politics.

Invitees to the private fundraiser will pay $1,000 each for a cocktail reception, $5,000 a plate for dinner.

It's not known how many people will attend.

Webber called Gingrich "an interesting figure who has a lot of insights on current events."

It's probably a smart move by the new chair because Newt is one of the few names with drawing power in their party. We should keep track of all the people who come to town while Sarah Palin is turned away. Romney has been here, Steele is coming, Rudy has been prominent and Newt will be helping the effort, while Palin is quarantined from the NJ GOP. Her treatment prompted this reaction from one conservative, pointed out by Fred Snowflack:
The message of the New Jersey GOP is loud and clear: not only is Sarah Palin is not welcome here, but neither are conservative Republicans. The GOP in in this state is a pathetic simulacrum of the party of Ronald Reagan - a political Potemkin Village populated by party hacks too busy shaking the plum tree to realize the ground beneath them is giving way.

At best, her presence here would have boosted the morale of the conservative faction of the Party - if only temporarily. I?m actually relieved that the Christie campaign made its intentions known, as this will serve as a warning to Mrs. Palin to avoid this particular pit of vipers

We'll see if Newt is able to tamp down that sentiment, because if conservatives stay home, Christie's got problems. An interesting note, the party website has the "Evening with Newt Gingrich" listed, which is basically a private house party with a former elected official, but not the Christie/Steele tour du Jersey which involves their party standard bearer and National Chairman. Make of that what you will.

Christie doesn't want Sarah Palin to stump for him, someone who has been loyal to her husband though disloyal to her constituents.

But he wants New Gingrich, who was not only disloyal to his constituents but cheated on wife #1 and wife #2, including serving divorce papers on wife #2 while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer so he could make mistress #2 into wife #3.

And he wants Rudy Giuliani who uses New York taxpayers' money intended for lower income residents to pay for police officers to drive his mistress to her out-of-state vacation home and walk her dogs.

Christie is the man who pretends to be the champion of honest government yet surrounding himself with dishonest government supporters.

Newt Would Be Less Damaging To Christie.... (0.00 / 0)
...than Palin.   But that's not saying much.

Christie already has all the hard right wingers, bigots and radical fundamentalist votes locked up.    They have no where else to go.   Gingrich's "contract" on America was a failure and a con job....Corzine can make that case stick without breaking a sweat.

The problem with Gingrich is that we've just had eight years  of Bush that has created the national economic shitstorm that most New Jerseyans are struggling to deal with and/or survive.

And if the Republicans can't take Gingrich (or Giuliani)  into their bosom and then dare to say anything remotely negative about anyone else's personal life; they can be nicely exposed as hypocrites.

Purely speculation but ... (0.00 / 0)
The silly season of politics is upon us, but I can't help thinking that none of this matters ... because, as some famous communist once said, it doesn't matter who votes (or why); all that matters is who counts the votes.

Has anyone at BlueJersey ever rlooked into the career of Robert Giles, who for years was the man behind the Ocean County curtain (literally, the man with the keys to a remote, public-prohibited warehouse that holds all the voting machines and electronic votes)?

When Corzine moved the state elections office from the AG to the State Department, somehow Robert Giles ended up as the physical big cheese of all state elections.

He is known in Ocean County as the man who for many years delivered the counts of Republican wins, even when logic defied results, until everyone just accepted that Democrats never win almost anywhere in Ocean County.

Funny, as soon as Giles was gone from Ocean County, I noticed Democrats started winning in Ocean County.  Rep. Adler, Carl Block's opponent for Stafford mayor, etc.  Granted, I can envision other reasons, as well.

And, maybe this isn't relevant to this diary, but the horserace talk just made me think of this bigger picture that troubles me.

Lee Lucas (0.00 / 0)
Since Newt was so quick to denounce Sotomayor for "racist" comments will he be asked to denounce racist slurs used by GOP Assembly candidate Lee Lucas?  Will Christie be asked to join other GOP leaders who have called upon Lucas to step down from the ticket?
