Marriage Equality and the ol' Stars and Stripes

by: Jay Lassiter

Sat Jun 27, 2009 at 05:42:23 PM EDT

Promoted by Jason Springer: Interesting visual representation of where things stand in the marriage equality debate. Repromoted by Rosi Saturday late Saturday night.

If the New Jersey legislature passed a marriage equality bill we could add one more white star to this flag.  Since New Jersey was the 3rd colony to become a state, we'd get star #3 to go along with Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire.

Looks like like the little dipper don't you think?  Anyone was Photoshop skillz feel free to add New Jersey on this image..... just to show up what it would look like.

Great. (0.00 / 0)
Both versions.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

My Ignorance (0.00 / 0)
Without being partisan, as difficult as that might be,can you please educate me on the politics of this issue.

Personally I see no big deal. Other states have done it why not us? But I know that politics often times gets in the way of good ideas.

In a paragraph or so help me out with just the politics of this issue.

Is it something that is better left for lame duck? If so why?

Would it hurt Corzine or help? Why?

Is it a Legislative issue, voter ballot issue, or Executive order?

Is this a catholic church issue that is better left to after an election?

To be honest with you, if people like myself , who agree that two people who love each and want to make that love " official" in a marraige don't understand the political realities of the " quest " then maybe those of you who are in favor have a lot more " educating of the ignorant" to do!

Teach me what you know!

Lame duck likely (4.00 / 1)
If i were a betting man, i would go to AC and put my money on "Squeaker Vote in Lameduck."  a lot of the "hard" stuff gets put into lame duck, so that's my guess.

since corzine was just at gay pride in Asbury Park talking about marriage equality i can only assume that (polling wise) there's just not a lot of public resistance to gay marriage equality.  If his camp thought this would hurt him there's NO WAY he'd be stumping on it.

so the politics of the issues is that we are aiming to pass marriage legislatively (no activist judges, baby) and that means it's basic math.  We need 50%+1 in the senate and assembly.  doing this legislatively is a higher bar, hence more politics.  and hence, people like me need to be mindful of our role educating others who are likeminded but a little fuzzy on the details.  so thanks for giving me a chance to try to do that.
