Election Night Open Thread

by: Jason Springer

Tue Jun 02, 2009 at 06:07:25 PM EDT

UPDATE # 2 by Jason:  Kate Whitman lost her race for Council, Donald Cresitello lost the Mayor's primary in Morristown and Jun Choi went down in Edison as well. Oh and they still can't count votes in Monmouth County.

UPDATE: Okay, I'm taking down the live stream link. It's off-air, has been for a while, won't get back up again and it's slowing things down for anybody participating in the open thread and trying to refresh for new comments. See comments for why - Rosi

It's primary election night and by the end of the evening, we will officially have the General Election matchups for Governor along with all seats in the Assembly and many local offices. The Governor stopped by to give a personal thank you yesterday before tonight's campaign kickoff.

We are doing Blue Jersey Radio at 7:30pm with Jeff co-hosting live on site in West Orange for the Kickoff Rally. The campaign will be streaming the nights festivites live and you can follow along.

You can watch along with NJN's live coverage through their stream.  What are you doing this election night? Join us to discuss the night's results and look forward to the upcoming election campaigns.  Share your thoughts in this election night open thread.

CWA Leadership Showing Up? (0.00 / 0)
I am curious whether the CWA union leadership , who have done nothing but bash the Governor and told their membership that he is the enemy, over the past 5 months ,would dare show up at his kickoff rally.

Corzine is a better person than me if he allows them anywhere near him tonight.

Would be curious as to any " sightings".

I asked Jeff (0.00 / 0)
on the radio show.  He didn't see any CWA at first clance, not to say they are or aren't there.  He saw SEIU and Carptenters.

[ Parent ]
And another (0.00 / 0)
The Insulators Union had a huge group in green t-shirts near the front.

CWA was apparently planning to come and protest the event, but reached a deal w/Corzine to stay away.

local race in Princeton Borough (4.00 / 3)
Princeton Borough and Township candidates and their supporters will be gathering at Conte's Pizza in Princeton for the first annual post-Primary Democratic unity party. Many of us have worked very hard to encourage competition within the local Democratic parties, especially important now that the Republicans have pretty much vanished as a viable force in our communities. But once the polls close less than ten minutes from now, we're all one party with democratically-chosen candidates. This year there's a 3-way race in the Borough for 2 spots on Borough Council (no challengers in the Township). All the candidates have worked hard. Advance congrats to all 3 for waging very positive campaigns.

Thanks, Dan (0.00 / 0)
When you get numbers, please feel free to post them

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

[ Parent ]
it was a tight contest (4.00 / 1)
Vote Count Percent
Jenny Crumiller 531 37.61%
Kevin Wilkes 472 33.43%
Mendy Fisch 409 28.97%
Total 1,412 100.00%

Jenny is a grassroots activist, Kevin has led innovative projects around the community, and Mendy is a Princeton University student who got nearly 200 students to vote absentee but also built substantial support throughout the Borough. Democracy in action, congrats to all.

Poor Joe Kyrillos (0.00 / 0)
They lead the telecast on NJN w/ the shot from Corzine HQ.  Then they go to Christie HQ and just as Kyrillos gets on mic, they interrupt to say they have breaking news where Biden is speaking for Corzine. Probably exactly what the Governor's people were hoping for.

Live stream not so live (0.00 / 0)
It's been off-air for a while now. And I think there may be internet issues now up in West Orange.

You can still watch at NJN - Biden's speaking now.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Biden trying to (0.00 / 0)
wrap Jon Corzine in Barack Obama. Biden touches on the common theme we will hear about how big a mess they inherited.  Now he's talking about what the Governor has done.

[ Parent ]
Biden just called him "Jon CAR-zine" (0.00 / 0)

Yes, he did (0.00 / 0)
but he certainly can say Jon, and has said that a bunch of times.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

[ Parent ]
then he called him (4.00 / 1)
America's Governor

[ Parent ]
Internet's dead (0.00 / 0)
And doesn't look like they're getting it back.

But the good news is, even with Lonegan and Christie duking it out in their separate quarters tonight, there are so many people trying to blog, report and communicate via internet up at the Corzine event that that seems to be the reason internet kicked.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Corzine on stage (0.00 / 0)
gives it up for all the elected officials.  Says this is the beginning of the Democrats taking back Trenton for another 4 years.

4 more years (4.00 / 1)
chant starts from the crowd, to which Corzine says being Governor of New Jersey is the highest honor of his life and serving the people is his highest calling.  He wants to thank Democrats across NJ for placing their faith in him and he will not let them down.  To the volunteers and activists, thank you for your support.

Next 153 days (0.00 / 0)
and who's counting won't be that easy.  NJ politics never is.  But with great leaders like VP Biden in our corner, we will prevail. Thanks Biden for standing up for values that New Jerseyans share.  Joe Biden is a great leader Corzine says.

Brings up great new President (0.00 / 0)
Barack Obama and the change in politics, to a round of applause. Says with a partner in the White House there is no limit to what we can achieve.  Says problems weren't created in NJ.  This fall's election is not the time to look backward and we're not going to.  This campaign is not about me says Corzine, it's about us.  It's about the choices we make and we're gonna do it together.

[ Parent ]
Says opponents (0.00 / 0)
have learned nothing from the mistakes of the past.  Tough times require tough decisions, but more importantly they require the right decisions.  Understanding and respecting that real choices must be made even if we might prefer otherwise.  Talks about how election is about choosing what is right. Mentions Education, talks abou increasing funding for education.  Committing billions to school construction and broke a 40 year impass on school funding with a formula that is rooted in a child's educational needs rather than her zip code.  Doing all of this because the quality of our education defines our future.  That's what democrats believe in and what we'll fight for.

[ Parent ]
Talks about more differences (0.00 / 0)
Healthcare is right and not a privileged and until they change nationally, we're enrolling more people here in NJ.  Talks about Bush admin trying to kick off 10,000 kids from Family Care, we said no.  We went to court and made a federal case and we won.

Talks about energy and how drill baby drill is wrong for NJ.  We value our clean beaches and shorelines.  Have obligation to leave world cleaner and thats why created energy master plan. That's why NJ installed more solar panels than any other state besides Cali in last 3 years.  Leading the charge on offshore windpower.  Creating 20,000 green collar jobs putting people to work in the next year.  Says we're making the right choices for NJ.

[ Parent ]
Talks more about (0.00 / 0)
economic difficulties and what they're doing.  Talks about mortgage assistance and food banks.  Talks about grants for new jobs created with over 20,000 applications already. Says we're improving NJ's tax climate.  Says foreclosure rate is ahlf the national one, our unemployment numbers are way to high but are well below national income and family incomes lead the nation.  Because of right choices, NJ will emerge sooner and stronger.

Our opponents disagree.  They ridicule every action we take.  They're idea of an economic stimulus is a 2 week sales tax holiday.  They say NJ should turn down Federal dollars.  Our opponents said no to tax cuts for working families and listed a whole host of other things they said no to in the stimulus. Our opponents said not to over 17 million in federal aid.  Their judgement reflects the wrong values and the wrong choices.  Says NJ voters are savvy.  Our opponents promise the moon.  They have this so called secret plan.  They won't tell you whose taxes they're gonna cut.  They say they'll lay off public employees, but won't say who or when or at what consequence.  They won't tell you what services will end or what teacher or firefighter will be laid off.  I'm not about to put my faith in the same people that gave George Bush and Dick Cheney power. America doesn't need to be Bushwacked again, NJ can't afford to be Bushwacked again he says.

Just took down (0.00 / 0)
the streaming video connection. They're not going to be able to get that back on line in time, and it's slowing down anybody refreshing for new comments.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Corzine says Republicans talk (0.00 / 0)
Democrats deliver.

They say they'll end pay to play politics, but after they finish awarding contracts.  We've ended dual office holding, comptroller, ag.  Says only thing Republicans have delivered is longest deepest recession in 80 years.  Why would we wanna go back to the same failed policies that created this problem in the 1st place.  We all know there is much at stake in this election.
We are proud our state has welcomed immigrants and we know they enrich our culture.  We trust women to make their own health care decisions, we believe gov't should allow people to marry who they love, and while we believe in the right to bear arms, 1 gun a month should suffice.

Our opponents disagree.  Gov't should be small enough to root for a president to fail, narrow enough and self righteous enough to dictate to the rest of us.  This is a very red meat speech. He says we must be bigger than that and we believe the American promise is for everyone.

Over the next 153 days (0.00 / 0)
he'll be fighting for you, all of you to the crowd.  He says he's been a fighter his whole life and goes through the family story. Says he knows what it's like to be toughened by basic training and is proud to have served his country and respects all who do.  Knows what its like to survive a near fatal accident.  I remember waking up in Cooper Hospital after 11 days in a coma.  I knew then and there I would walk out of that hospital.  Tonight I feel just as confident that we are going to win this election.  You can be sure I'm gonna fight like hell for our values.  Working together we will win this election and win the fight for a more prosperous, progressive, responsible NJ.  The end of his speech.

I thought the two speeches were very good (0.00 / 0)
Corzine's acceptance speech (4.00 / 1)
Read it here.

What do you think of the speech?

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Very, very impressed! (0.00 / 0)
I'm glad Corzine came out swinging.  Even us in the blogosphere have been guilty of forgetting the horrors that eight years of Republican rule on the national level have dealt our country and contributed to financial crisis in our state, especially now that President Obama has been in office for several months and been working hard to start to fix the massive problems.

Many blame Corzine for New Jersey's problems, but in fact many of them were caused by ailments of a national scale, most of which caused directly or indirectly by Bush and his insane policies.

He pretty much covered all bases and it got me energized even just reading it.

I'm ready to go and I can't wait for him to go after Christie even more.

Dear People At Lonegan Rally in the Background on NJN, (4.00 / 3)
I can't hear anything your state chairman is saying. You have no rhythm and your incessant sign-waving is making me dizzy. Please... stop.

Regards, JRB

Anybody else notice... (4.00 / 1)
... what Biden did when Corzine mentioned marriage equality?

hmmmm.... (0.00 / 0)
No, I didn't.

Dying to know.

Can I just tell you I'm tired and bleary enough that I didn't even have the visual chops to distinguish between black print and the blue print, signifying: link. Duhhhhh.....

As to what Biden did: Excellent!
