Quote of the Day: We keep missing each other

by: Jason Springer

Wed May 27, 2009 at 11:15:00 AM EDT

From an article on Pittsburghlive.com, we get news about the Pennsylvania US Senate race and the effort to get Joe Sestak to back down from challenging Arlen Specter in the primary:
Word out of Washington, D.C., is that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the political wiseguys from the Obama administration plan on "visiting with" Pennsylvania Democrat Rep. Joe Sestak.

Their objective is clear: Get him off the stage and out of a primary race against incumbent (and now Democrat) Sen. Arlen Specter.

"I have received a call" from DSCC chairman Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, Sestak said, "but we keep missing each other."

So the battle lines are drawn: Sestak is not inclined to be pushed out of the race, and Menendez's marching orders from the White House are to shove, not just push.

Many Democrats have urged Sestak to challenge Specter and Senate Guru says that the netroots overwhelmingly supports a Draft Sestak effort. The DSCC and White House stepped in for the NY Senate race and now are taking an active role in PA. Their decision to play in these races will no doubt be tested when we get to the seat in Illinois. What do you think of Menendez, on behalf of the DSCC, trying to clear the field?

I don't like it (0.00 / 0)
I would like a Democrat in the seat -- Sestak would be fine -- and I hope there is a primary. All the more so because there is no reason for ordinary Democrats to trust Specter.

I do understand the establishment's perspective. Specter's vote IS crucial this session, health care (etc.) MUST be passed, and if the price is Democrat Specter for another six years so be it. So I don't think it is some outrageous betrayal, and it's a rational choice they're making.  But they had better have Specter on board for this Congress, and the rest of the centrists too.

I'm sure their perspective will be different in Illinois.  Well, different in the sense they'll be shoving the incumbent out.

once again our junior Senator (0.00 / 0)
doesn't get it. What is needed to move this country forward are more and BETTER Democrats. Specter's party switch was solely motivated by amoral self preservation. He is on the wrong side of way too many progressive issues to waste time on him. Sestak or vitually any real Democrat would be better than that anitquated DINO,

So I guess it won't matter (0.00 / 0)
much when they do connect as Bob won't be able to do any persuading anyway. Thanks Hopeful.

At least one Montco Dem (0.00 / 0)
party stalwart of my acquaintance thinks the Obama organization in the five counties (that's Philly, Bucks, Montgomery, Chester and Delaware, the city and its primary suburbs) is lining up to support Sestak. There was a very well organized effort to support Obama and those people are not itching to support a DINO. So Sestak has more than a chance in the primary. Obviously (to me anyway) the national Dems' enthusiasm for Specter has to do with his name recognition and the profound unlikelihood that Pat Toomey (rw knuckledragger and presumptive Rep. Sen.candidate) can beat Specter in the general. If Specter gets the Dem nomination he's essentially guaranteed to win the election, barring some variant on Edwin Edward's axiom. I would not say the same about Sestak.
