Garrett on NRCC Watch List

by: Juan Melli

Thu Mar 30, 2006 at 10:07:06 AM EST

Congressman Scott Garrett's campaign seems to be feeling the heat a bit from the competition. The National Republican Congressional Committee is getting worried, too. This was at the top of a fundraising invitation recently sent out:
We need your help!  Congressman Scott Garrett is on the NRCC Watch List!
See the entire invitation.

Being from Sussex County (0.00 / 0)
I can tell you that it's a longshot.  This is 2/3 Republican and we can only hope that enough people from Bergen/Passaic will turn out.  He really is extreme far right, voting against unemplyment extensions and Katrina money.  A real rubber stamper.

I didn't realize until recently he was part of the American Taliban.  Details here...

Being from Bergen County (0.00 / 0)
I can tell you it's unlikely that the Dems have enough support in the section of the county encompassed by the 5th to offset the drubbing the candidate's going to get in the western portion of the district.  North Bergen is trending Democratic in the lower levels of government, but it's still the more Republican section of the county.

I still think the best chance for a moderate to take this district (at least until the next redistricting) is to support a moderate Republican against Garrett.

In 2010, however, I'm firmly in support of any redistricting plan that puts Garrett in Frelinghuysen's district.  The incumbent protection plan that both parties put forth after the 2000 census was a travesty; there should have been (at least) two battleground districts in the state, like there were prior to the redistricting.

Having read Garrett's ELECs extensively... (0.00 / 0)
I can tell you that the amount of direct financial support he has earned from Warren County is quite minimal. Some from Sussex, but the vast majority is from either Bergen or out of state, with out of state the clear leader.

People in Warren largely got Bunky figured out, as well. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard, from registered republicans out here, this question:

"He's a real prick, isn't he?"

A lot of people out here have him figured out, especially after the Delaware Flooding that he tried to ignore, then avoid. The problem is that most just blindly vote the straight ticket and party organization out here is...ahem...a work in progress.

Long progress.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

Does it actually mean anything... (0.00 / 0)
...to put him on the NRCC "Watch List", or is that just something they put on all fundraising solicitations?

it means something (0.00 / 0)
They don't put it on all solicitations.

What *exactly* does it mean? (0.00 / 0)
I tried to Google it, and found nothing at all...  I have my guesses, I just want to hear it from the guys that posted about it here...

What it means (0.00 / 0)
It means the NRCC is concerned that Garrett is a weak link. Paul's campaign is generating a buzz, and they're scared. You probably won't find anything by googling it as it's not something that the NRCC would publicize. Wouldn't be good PR to let people know you're in trouble, would it.....Scott?

Of course I don't expect it to be on Google coming from them... (0.00 / 0)
I just figured one of the opposition blogs might have mentioned it before now... this is really the first I've heard of it, let alone had it explained to me, although I pretty much had a good idea what it was; but it's always nice to have your instincts confirmed and know you can figure out what something is from the context.
