Clean water Bill passes House 413 - 10. Guess who was one of the 10.

Last week, we noted that Scott Garrett was yet again the lone NJ Representative to vote against the COPS bill.  And while (putting on my Scott Garrett "government and spending is bad" hat) I can see how he could conceivably make an argument that "even the ACLU" sees a better way to use the funding to accomplish the goal of crime reduction, I'm sure he voted against it for reasons different from the ACLU, but let's leave those assumptions aside for now.

There was another bill passed last week, HR 1145, the National Water Research and Development Initiative of 2009, which passed the House by a stunning 403 vote margin, leaving Garrett as one of only 10 Congressmen/Congresswomen to vote against assuring that the US has adequate water supplies and clean drinking water, and to streamline the 20+ agencies responsible for US water policy.  Even for someone that claims to be against government spending (notwithstanding his consistent votes for hundreds of billions to Iraq with no oversight, despite widespread reports of waste and fraud), this Bill would actually reduce duplicate activities, efforts and resources, and therefore save money.

When this country has been faced with natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, tornadoes across the Midwest, droughts in the south and west, wildfires in California and toxic spills contaminating our water supply around the region and country, it is absolutely baffling why this would be something to vote against.  At a time when our food and water supplies are at risk - when there are shortages around the country and when we hear of chemicals infiltrating the water supply what does this say about the priorities of someone who doesn't think protecting our nation's water supply from contamination is important?

Consider the following:

I may not see eye to eye with Garrett on most issues.  But there are times where I can understand why he is voting the way he votes.

When it comes to protecting our water - a homeland security issue, I am at a loss for words.

What makes his vote even odder is that he can't even make a federalist, let-each-states-fund-their-own-water argument since the water cycle isn't exactly one for respecting state lines.

interestingly (0.00 / 0)
he usually goes with a more generic "all spending is bad because you can spend your own money better than I or anyone else can".  When he votes against federal programs, I haven't seen as much federalism used as opposed to "don't spend anything on anything".

Of course, that doesn't consider the limitless spending for Iraq with no oversight, which has had more documented waste and fraud than most of what he decries....

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

I should have added (0.00 / 0)
"don't spend anything on anything" ever - federal or state.

That was in my original comment, which got deleted when I hit the wrong button...

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

Let's Flush Mr Garrett Down The Toilet... (4.00 / 1)
...of NJ political history.

We need to get a dump Garrett PAC going strong and start running ads exposing this POS to the people of the 5th.

No candidate is needed to do this.  The man is a threat to the health and safety of his constituents.

To vote against this bill you have to be truly malevolent, corrupt and/or absolutely delusional.

Here's a brief summary from the bill:

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/...

      (a) Initiative and Purpose- The President shall implement a National Water Research and Development Initiative (in this Act referred to as the `Initiative'). The purpose of the Initiative is to improve the Federal Government's role in designing and implementing Federal water research, development, demonstration, data collection and dissemination, education, and technology transfer activities to address changes in water use, quality, supply, and demand in the United States, including providing additional support to increase water supply through greater efficiency, conservation, and measures to abate water quality impairment.

Preservation and conservation of both the quantity and the quality of our nation's (and NJ's) water supplies will be a critical matter of national security for the near and long terms.  Especially in the next 20 years when the effects of global warming start to kick in with greater intensity.

We need to find ways to run cities on a fraction of the water we know use and ways to  eliminate agricultural run off pollution and waste and ways to clean up/modify industrial processes and the mining industry so the less water is wasted.

It feels good being even more CONSERVE-ative than Scott Garrett on this issue.

Thanks for sounding another alarm clammyc!

it's not that (4.00 / 1)
he doesn't believe the government should spend money. it's that he doesn't believe the federal government should have the power to regulate ANYTHING (other than straight-up military defense).

which is ridiculous, since, as DSDAN said, water isn't exactly going to respect state lines.
