Yet Another Poll Confirms NJ Support and Momentum in Favor of Marriage Equality

by: Jeff Gardner

Thu Apr 23, 2009 at 11:22:44 AM EDT

Today's Quinnipiac Poll confirms what should be obvious by now to anyone paying attention - the time for Marriage Equality in New Jersey is now.

The poll - with a huge sample size of over 2,000 New Jersey voters - found that New Jersey supports marriage equality by 49 to 43 percent, easily outside the margin of error. But, it isn't just the headline that legislators should care about, it's the series of other points about the poll that should really strike a chord:

- the poll was completely independent, not commissioned by any advocacy group

- support for marriage equality is up from 44-50 in December 2006. That's a 12-point turnaround in just over two years, going from -6 to +6.

- the trendlines across the board are overwhelmingly in the direction of embracing marriage equality. It's no longer just the right thing to do - it's the popular thing to do!

- voters reject by 66 to 30 percent the argument that same-sex marriage "is a threat to the traditional marriage between a man and a woman." (Even Republicans disagree with this claim 51 to 46 percent, as do those who attend religious services weekly, 52 to 43 percent.)

On the heels of action by the legislatures of Vermont and Connecticut, the time for lifting the ban on gay couples marrying in New Jersey has clearly arrived. New Jersey voters are ready for it, and (quite literally) are calling for it.

Senators - let's do this thing!

UPDATE: The new poll numbers inspired not one, but two, diaries on the subject. Nick's take is here. - - Rosi

I think that 66-30 number is the key (4.00 / 2)
I never thought it made any sense to say that if a gay couple wants to get married that threatens traditional marriage, it seems quite the opposite.  But the right hung their hopes on the argument, and now it has collapsed.

There is no intellectually/morally legitimate argument in support of the status quo.

The "rationales" are all fairly easily dismissed in any fair debate...the underlying opposition is based on a gut level bigotry that is itself based on all manner of conditioned prejudice and fear (factors which also are at the core of all manner of "fundamentalisms").

The more light and love enters into people's hearts and minds the less inclined they will be to deny others the right to marriage equality under the law.

the Legislature is districts not statewide (0.00 / 0)
While the "urban" and "suburban" regions are in favor, the other three "Phillyland," "shore," and "exurban" aren't.

If this is going to move beyond the discussion stage, then CU couples need to meet with their senators and discuss their problems.  Rhetoric and PR gimmicks aren't going to cut it.

It is going to be tough enough to get senators like Girgenti but some Republicans will be needed like Baroni, Beck and Bateman (I think I exhausted the list of "moderate" GOP senators.)

Duhhhhhh..... (0.00 / 0)
This is getting boring.  Thanks for stating the obvious.  We all know that there's "a ways to go".   No one claims it will be easy to get this passed.

The point is that it's going to get done, it's happenin'.   Those poll numbers are.....how do you say.........FACTS!!!.

Instead of being happy for our gay brothers and sisters you consistently project the glass as half empty for them in re this struggle.   The poll numbers are an encouraging good sign, that's a fact.  As little as two years ago, it would have been hard to imagine the progress that's been made so far.   The trends are in the direction of progress!!!  Ain't it great!   You got a problem with progress?

Eat yer heart out Mr Negative.   Whether it's this year or three years or ten....it's gonna happen, despite your cynical spin.

The progressive agenda marches on.  Praise the Lord!!!

What happened to 2009??? (0.00 / 0)
There have been LOUD proclamations from Steven and company that ME is right around the corner and would happen in 2007, then 2008 and then 2009.  Senate President Codey was savagely attacked recently for saying that it would take a while.  Now, here you are agreeing with him!!

But, hey, nice way to respond to the substantive political issues as usual.  :-)

Quotes Please... (0.00 / 0)
I know I've never given specific dates, and I doubt Steven has.

It's the job of an advocacy organization to be forceful and positive in the advancement of its agenda.  By any measure GSE is doing a fantastic job.   Governor Corzine and over 800 (as I recall) people attended an excellent ball/fundraser recently.    People like Steve Rothman who were fence sitters came on board and spoke with passion for ME.

It could very well happen this year; but (for me at least) the larger point is that it's going to happen.

One could have more respect for your negative spin on all this if you had the balls to come out and say just why you are against marriage equality.   But you don't have the integrity to do that because you're clever enough to know that that's an argument you can't win.

Then you consistently show some level of "concern" over the issue (implying that you are straight out for ME) but also consistently frame/spin all the positive news in the most negative way possible.

Here's three names to call to express support for marriage equality...

Senate President Dick Codey at (973) 731-6770

Senate Majority Leader Steve Sweeney at (856) 251-9801

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Paul Sarlo at (201) 804-8118

This is a statewide issue and every progressive in NJ should be letting these three key people know that this issue matters.

May I ask an anthropological question about blogs (0.00 / 0)
It's a serious one, not meant to be snarky, I swear it:  At what point in a thread, ie how many posts deep, does a thread become read by only a very few people?

Ideally, Soapblox..... (0.00 / 0)
or Google analytics (or some other method/avenue) should be able to provide a site owner with specific data regarding which "page"/diary was read/clicked on how many times, at what times and for how long (hang time).

Such a report would actually answer Steven's question with great specificity.   If such a report/analysis doesn't exist I suggest someone figure out a way to do it as the data would be useful.  Maybe someone with more net savvy than I could clarify the question?

Putting aside the technical "meta" discussion...it seems to me that if no one reads past an arbitrary number of comments, then it only matters to the remaining few participants/observers (left in the room) that the points get hashed out.

Good news for y'all (if anyone is still "here" that is).

I pledge to ignore Creed's "comments" from this point on.   It's a pointless enterprise in this setting.

Great, if now Creed will also agree (4.00 / 2)
We'll be all set.

At least on this topic, I think you've both been heard, and loud and clear.

But ya know we luv ya, right?

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Since we're way deep into this thread and only a few will read this... (4.00 / 1)
A story that will give us all a good collective laugh or groan...

A legislator who's been in office quite a while told us on a visit that s/he supports the state's current marriage equality law.  We told him/her there wasn't one yet - only civil unions.  The legislator said, you're wrong.  You have the same certificate I do, certificate of civil marriage - the state makes no difference in name for straight couples or gay couples.  I know, the legislator said, I recently looked at the certificate.  Well, we tried to tell the legislator otherwise.  But he/she insisted.  In the end, s/he told us to get our facts right but added that on the off-chance we were right - but again, we weren't - s/he would vote with us.

[ Parent ]
if that was a senator, (0.00 / 0)
then you're getting somewhere.

The Senate is the linchpin on this whole thing.  I don't know why Codey is the whipping boy on this.  He can post S1967 for a vote AFTER it gets out of committee, but right now it will lose.  Those who have never been and will never be elected to anything can say that it should be different, but you have to keep a majority of your caucus happy to stay the leader-it is that "simple" and that difficult.

This is why the Judiciary Committee is really the big deal, but phone calls aren't going to do it.  Constituent visits are what is going to be required.
