Kean & Byrne discuss the Governor's race

by: Jason Springer

Sat Apr 25, 2009 at 11:02:35 AM EDT

Here is a video version of the Kean-Byrne dialogue from NJ Voices over at the Star Ledger where the former Governors discuss the upcoming race.  Editor Fran Wood led the discussion:
Byrne says Jon Corzine should stay in office. "This is a governor who is getting us through the shoals of tough economic times," he says.

Kean disagrees: "Jon Corzine is a nice guy. But four years is enough."

They went back and forth on the borrowing that has been done and who was responsible for it with Byrne pointing to the Whitman administration for their share of the blame. Byrne talked about the similarities to his own re-election situation back in 1977. Here's the video:

BLOGGER ETHICS PANEL! (0.00 / 0)
Tom Kean Sr. is the honorary chairman of the Chris Christie for Governor campaign, but was not identified as such on this piece.  But bloggers have no ethics!

The Star Ledger should know Kean's role in the campaign because back on February 11 they reported:

Kean, who was also named honorary chairman of Christie's campaign

They also noted Kean said,

"We've known each other almost a third of a century," Kean told reporters at the Bernards Inn in Bernardsville. "I've been proud of him, very, very proud of everything he's done and everything he's accomplished, and delighted that he's going to make this run for governor."

So he's known Christie for 32 years or so, years that include Chris Christie admitting in a court of law that he defamed two other Republican politicians in a primary.

Whatever makes you proud, Governor.

A contest of ideas (0.00 / 0)
I understand that Governors Byrne and Kean, no longer in the business themselves, have the luxury to discuss public policy without worrying about poll numbers.  However, if Chris Christie is a Republican in the Kean mold, I am disappointed that he has not offered any meaningful contribution to the debate over how to repair New Jersey and set us on the road to recovery.

Contrary to what Governor Kean asserted, I believe Jon Corzine possesses the clarity of vision to lead our state forward.  That said, it's my sincere hope that Christie and Republicans engage Corzine and Democrats in a thoughtful debate about the future of New Jersey.

Call me silly for thinking that can happen in the highly charged environment of a political campaign, but one can hope this election cycle will be different.  And to borrow from Barack Obama, "There has never been anything false about hope."

More likely (0.00 / 0)
you will end up with a campaign of talking points. I know Obama talked about Hope, but I wouldn't hold out much for this one.

The former Governor Kean (0.00 / 0)
left this state in a hole that had to be closed with increased taxes. Jim Florio balanced the budget in accordance with the State Constitution and was run out of office by a PR campaign paid for by those who prefer a government of borrow and embezzle.
Chris Christie looks like a Sopranos' hit man. Just saying,---- but that's just me.

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.
