You Know, Had They Done This Two Years Ago ...

Promoted by Jason Springer: Well it didn't take Christie long to break that promise.

... then Christie would never have gotten his ridiculous heroic image in the first place.

The Star Ledger does some real reporting, catching Christie in a lie about campaign donations:

Christopher Christie is attending a campaign fundraiser hosted by a lawyer whose firm got a lucrative no-bid contract when the Republican gubernatorial candidate was U.S. attorney.

Christie was scheduled to be at the $500-per-plate Morristown fundraiser today, a week after saying he'd reject all future donations from lawyers to whom he gave monitoring contracts.

Seriously, where was the critical reporting on Christie before?  Weird.

This may or may not be a big story.  The report itself is contradictory.  In the first paragraph the lawyer is listed as "host".  In another paragraph he is listed as "co-host".  There is a big difference.  As host if the lawyer held the event at his home or paid for the dinner out of his own pocket it has to be listed an in-kind donation and reported to ELEC.  And it would certainly undermine Christie's promise not to accept these kinds of donations.

OTOH, co-host is simply an honorary designation that simply conveys an endorsement of Christie's candidacy.  There is nothing illegal or even unethical about that.  Publicly endorsing and asking your friends to vote for a candidate who did you a political favor some years ago is hardly "pay to play"; in fact, it is more like play and then maybe pay a few years later.

I believe the lawyer in question has already donated funds to Christie's campaign, and if that's the case Christie should return the money or be held accountable for it by the media and the voters.

The bottom line is we need to know where the event was held, who organized it and who paid for it.
