What "BIG" government looks like

by: Scott Weingart

Thu Mar 12, 2009 at 11:04:21 AM EDT

Right-wing commentator Bob Ingle calls Governor Corzine "a BIG Government guy" (emphasis his). This, according to Ingle, is what "BIG" government looks like:

The Star Ledger isn't kidding when they call the governor's budget "draconian.". Indeed, the proposed cuts in this year's budget cut dwarf anything seen in the past 60 years. In only five years since 1952 has state spending decreased, and never have cuts exceeded 2.21% of prior year's spending. Corzine's budget literally decimates spending; the $29.8 billion he is proposing for 2010 represents a cut of more than 10% from estimated 2009 expenditures of $33.2 billion. In fact, Corzine's cuts blow away the other five years combined, both in absolute dollars and in percentage:

State budget cuts since 1951

YearSpending cut
$ billionpercent
2010$  3,403.510.2%
1976$  61.02.2%
1993$  258.31.7%
2009$  375.01.1%
1955$  1.40.6%
2006$  135.10.5%

All of those governors are Democrats, and "BIG government" Jon Corzine is the only one who makes the list twice. It seems Ingle could use a semester or two of remedial math.

the biggest problem (0.00 / 0)
is that our Governor had to raise taxes to keep spending .He really didn't cut spending to match revenue .I don't think taxing property tax was a great idea .Plus he didn't cut any programs like COAH ,or pre K which will put more pressure on towns property taxes .

Huh (0.00 / 0)
Why is that a problem?  And if he's spending less in abolute terms, how could he not have cut spending?

the biggest problem (4.00 / 1)
is that he has cut spending 2 years in a row, and cut spending by $4 billion this year, yet comments like this one still come out of the woodwork.

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

Doesn't matter (4.00 / 1)
It's like the phrase, "fiscal conservative."  Republicans can run up huge deficits but still attack Democrats as being fiscally irrepsonsible.  If you're for programs to help average people, you believe in "big" government no matter how much you actually spend, according to Republican rules.

And, btw, there's nothing wrong with "big" government.  Big problems need big solutions.

What graph.... (0.00 / 0)
are you guys looking at...

It looks to me like the cut he's made is 1/2 of the increases he put through in 2006, and 2007....

Not to mention the biggest increase on the graph... 2005...

Are we looking at the same graph???!?!

You'll get more graphs soon... (0.00 / 0)
...if you don't like this one. But here's a taste of what's to come:

Corzine's administration will have presided over a 5% cut in real state spending from FY06 to FY10. That will be the biggest cut since Brendan Byrne's second term, during which inflation was at 50-year highs. Corzine will have also presided over an average spending increase of a measly 1.4% per year, far better than any governor in recent history.

what cuts ? (0.00 / 0)
The problem with that CUT in spending came on the backs of the property taxpayer...which have been up over 16% in the last 3 years ,property tax reform at it's best .The other problem I have with corzine's spending cuts would be his pension deferral ,which is not a spending cut ,but a deferral ,which he called a budget gimmick when used by Whitman .something he would never resort to

what counts (0.00 / 0)
the overall tax burden and what services you get.

The overall tax burden is going up.

The steps that McGreevey(!) actually managed to make (E-Z Pass and Motor Vehicles) haven't been built upon.

Rousseau Admits That FY 2010 Budget Is Really More Than $32 Billion (0.00 / 0)
Treasurer
Admission Exposes Governor's Claim of Smaller Budget as Completely Disingenuous

State Treasurer David Rousseau admitted that he and Governor Corzine did not include $2.2 billion in federal stimulus funds in his stated $29.8 billion budget....So much for blowing away cutting the budget to unheard of levels !!! Corzine isn't even cutting 1 billion !!

State employees (0.00 / 0)
Does NJ really need 85K State employees?

Your Answer? (3.00 / 1)
What services would you prefer to do without?

What services would you prefer to be privatized?

Of the 85,000 how many do you believe are going to work today and doing absolutely nothing?

Everyone talks about " private industry" as if it was some sort of " lean, mean, fighting machine". Well, it is not! Private industry has its percentage of bums just like the public sector. But the public sector has a bad rap , I beleive , because the people who " speak for" the public employees , the out of touch union heads, make the average government worker appear to be greedy and self centered.

Have you ever noticed how the teachers unions sponsor " feel good" advertisements to garner public support? When was the last time the greedy CWA spent some money explaining the good things government workers do for the taxpayers ?

Many people , maybe even yourself , have a very negative opinion of state workers that is really not warranted. But if that is all you hear then perception becomes reality.

State employee Union leaders  need to do a better job of explaining to their employers, the taxpayers, what it is they do each day.
