Jon Shure: Here they come

Cross posted from ChangeNJ.

"We cannot tax our way to prosperity." This is the new vogue sound bite from the right, already being employed against the budget proposal Gov. Corzine puts out today. The budget needs to be thoroughly vetted and we look forward to doing that. But in the meantime, progressive-minded folk need to be out front countering the taxes-are-evil mantra. Taxes aren't good and they aren't bad. They are part of a government's financial plan and what's important is who's taxed, how much and how the money is used.

We can't borrow our way to prosperity. We can't spend our way to propserity. We can't budget-cut our way to prosperity. Each of these statements is as ridiculous as the other. And we can't lie our way to prosperity either. It's a little more complicated than that. Who--and what message-- controls the terms of the debate is crucial. We need to keep that in mind.

Here's my answer (0.00 / 0)
Maybe we can't tax ourselves to prosperity, but we can destroy ourselves entirely by being afraid to bring the budget into balance.  By the way, oddly enough, the state IS prosperous, but the budget is what is screwed up.  Corzine isn't trying to "tax our way to prosperity";  he's trying to straighten out the budget mess.

The federal government is currently owned and operated by the Republicans and they can't do anything right, from the war in Iraq to disaster relief and meeting emergencies, to protecting our rights as citizens.  And the vice president can't even follow basic safety rules when he goes hunting and winds up shooting his friend in the face.  Their budget is a complete mess, with the only difference being that they can borrow more easily that the states, so they have placed us in massive debt to countries like communist China.  And just look at the GAO report on how FEMA handled contracts for Katrina cleanup.  You can't trust the Republicans in DC to spend your money.  You want to trust them with it in NJ?

supply side propaganda (0.00 / 0)
According to supply side dogma cutting taxes increases revenue. By that standard eliminating all taxes will have the government swimming in cash in no time at all. Borrow and embezzle is not sound fiscal policy. The Book of Revelation is not sound foreign policy. Anyone who still subscribes to republican propaganda has a thought disorder coupled with loose associations. It is safe to call them the Idioti. Thank Zeus I'm a Democrat.

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.
