Faison won't run, backs Redd for Mayor of Camden

by: Jason Springer

Mon Feb 23, 2009 at 10:28:43 PM EST

Big news for Dana Redd via PolitickerNJ:
South Jersey sources report that Camden Mayor Gwendolyn Faison tonight announced she would not run for reelection in June, and endorsed the mayoral candidacy of state Sen. Dana Redd.
Redd had the party backing with many turning out for the launch of her campaign a few weeks ago.

New State Senator? (0.00 / 0)
Some important decisions now must occur. Redd must soon annouce that she is leaving the State Senate and a replacement will need to be named quickly since Redd was also on the important Senate Budget Committee.

Who will replace her?

Will her budget seat remain in the hands of a South Jersey State Senator?

Would they dare put a fiscal conservative like Van Drew on the budget Committee?

If Donald Norcross wants the seat he will probaly get it. It would also be a coup if he gets on the budget committee, but I don't see Codey doing that.

gonna be interesting (0.00 / 0)
Actually, Senator Redd wouldn't become Mayor Redd until January of 2010 unless an arrangement is made for a sooner transition which would be doubtful.

If Donald Norcross becomes Senator, then the Fifth would have no African-American representation unless Curtis Jenkins gets an Assembly seat as a consolation prize.

Norcross (or whomever is elected from the Fifth) would have a better shot at the Budget Committee than Van Drew would because they aren't going to put marginal seats on the Committee since they need every vote.
