Kasparian Breaks With Ferrieroism!!!!!!!?

by: Nick Lento

Thu Feb 05, 2009 at 08:57:21 PM EST

Today's Bergen Record has an interesting headline in a story, by Michael Gartland,    http://www.northjersey.com/new...   that boldly proclaims...

Kasparian: Pay-to-play must end

Here's a bit of the story...

Michael Kasparian is advocating public financing for political campaigns as a remedy to political patronage.

"If there was a level playing field, then I think this idea of pay-to-play goes away," the newly minted chairman of the Bergen County Democratic Organization said Wednesday night. "Until you stem the demand for dollars, the desire for dollars is not going to ebb."

The statements came at his first appearance before Bergen Grassroots, a reformist wing of the party that advocated opposition to Kasparian's run for chairman.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend the meeting last night with my trusty little Casio recorder.   It would have been great to have had this apparent epiphany/conversion fully recorded!

Kasparian, let us not forget, is the guy that Joseph Ferriero hand picked to be his successor.  Why would Joe Ferriero do all in his power to get this guy into his seat so he could implement reformist policies to which Joe Ferriero was/is opposed???

Nick Lento :: Kasparian Breaks With Ferrieroism!!!!!!!?
Kasparian is the guy that the "Englewood Reporter" covered with the following story in 2007....  http://www.theenglewoodreport....

Here's an extended quote from that article....

To utilize the new zoning, the development firm S. Hekemian Kasparian Troast LLC (HKT) proposed some years ago to develop a major site in Englewood?s industrial area south of Route 4, and received the support of the City Council for their plan. The original plan for a large office, hotel and residential project received opposition from industrial property owners who objected to losing their land under eminent domain, and from citizens in neighboring Leonia, from which the property would have been accessed. In addition, there was concern in some quarters over the reappointment of Councilman Doug Bern as the lawyer for the Northwest Bergen County Utilities Authority, whose chairman was none other than Michael Kasparian of HKT. Concern also arose from the apparent relationship that some Englewood Council members enjoyed with Democratic County Chairman Joseph Ferriero, whose law firm represented HKT. However, this plan was eventually aborted after a judge ruled that legal procedures had been improperly followed.

More recently, HKT submitted an altered plan, no longer reliant on eminent domain, and with a new access road from the north to be constructed by the City. Known as Flatrock Square, it included an office building, an 8-story hotel, 399 residential units and a parking deck.

After numerous hearings before the Planning Board, during which HKT resisted the office building requirement, a sudden agreement was reached in August, 2005. Through the auspices of Mayor Michael Wildes, the Planning Board conducted a midnight vote, which allowed for an all-condo project. The Chairwoman of the Planning Board, Hillary Ballon, resigned over the episode (?Englewood planner resigns in protest,? The Bergen Record, 9/20/05).

The HKT drama continues in 2007, as the developers are appearing before Mr. Wildes? Planning Board to get yet another change on the project. HKT has now requested that the all-condo requirement be waived, claiming the condo market is too weak, and has offered cash payments to the City instead.

Here's something from the The Englewood Reporter that's from just last month...  http://www.theenglewoodreport....

It's not just the H of developer HKT that has been active. Michael Kasparian, who once served as the president of Hekemian Kasparian Troast LLC, the developer of Rt 4 South, is now likely to replace Joe Ferriero as head of the BCDO pay-to-play machine. Kasparian still serves as chairman of the Northwest Bergen County Utilities Authority (which controversially gave then Englewood Councilman Doug Bern a gig as their attorney after Bern OK'd the redevelopment of the Rt 4 South property). Indicted BCDO Boss Joe Ferriero served as Hekemian Kasparian Troast's lawyer.

Of course, all who come bearing gifts deny that they are expecting a quid pro quo.   And, of course, those who benefit from the BCDO pay-to-play machine only stand for "promoting good government."

But are those bearing gifts, incredible dividends and political "goodwill" conning us against our wills, or are we willingly turning a blind eye?

Who among those receiving largesse from a developer will urge their flock or members to suspect and vet the corporate motives of Mssrs. Kasparian and Hekemian when they develop in their communities?  Wouldn't such due diligence be an ingratitude to a "friend's" generosity?

Ask the nice people, charities and banks who were impressed for decades by the financial returns and charitable generosity of a successful, good man -- Bernie Madoff.

But alas, if we are to believe the quote and the headline in todays Bergen Record story, Michael Kasparian has "changed his spots" and has decided to join governor Corzine in his call for reforms that would end pay to play...  http://www.politickernj.com/ma...

Corzine promised that the plan -- parts of which he's already enacted through executive order and parts of which will require legislation-- will end pay-to-play once and for all, at all levels of government.

We have reached a point where New Jerseyans have come to believe that instead of government of, by and for the people, we have a government of, by and for political contributors, lobbyists and those who are at every level of pay to play, said Corzine at an outdoor ceremony in front of the state house.  Today, that era ends.

I'm pleased that Both Kasparian and John Corzine are now evidently both on the same page with me on this issue!!!  ....At least rhetorically.

The proof will be in the pudding, and the devil (if there is one here) will be in the details.

I would like to see Chairman Kasparian and Governor Corzine and Steve Rothman all come together and hold a press conference to publicly declare their support for Loretta Weinberg's "Party Democracy Act"  http://www.bluejersey.com/show...  which has been languishing in Committee.   Let's get that bill out on the floor for an open vote and see just who the enemies of reform are!   Perhaps in a floor vote it would pass overwhelmingly as many would be ashamed to publicly declare themselves as allied with the "good old boys network" that the Act is designed to democratize!

It has come to my attention that Kasparian also had a few words to say last night on the subject of how expensive it is to finance campaigns in the media.  He even mentioned (I was told) that he felt that the public owned the airwaves.....implying, I suppose that media outlets should give special ad rates to political campaigns or, better yet, free time!!!   Perhaps we should all implore Congressman Rothman to introduce some legislation to that effect!   Now that the Chair of the BCDO has become a self declared enemy of the pay to play system all things are posible, eh?

Before we can all declare victory and go home, let's see what concrete changes are actually made in policy, personnel, legislation, fund raising practices, cronyism, sweet heart deals, etc etc etc.

It would be truly a "many splendored thing" if the new BCDO Chair Michael Kasparian has suddenly found religion and will do a "180" in terms of changing the Joe Ferriero bossed BCDO into a democratic and progressive organization!   Hallelujah!!!

Seriously folks, the question that must be asked and answered is whether Michael Kasparian has had a sincere conversion and is honestly reversing a career lifetime of being a creature of pay to play in order to become a reformer.......or is he just mouthing some words to take the wind out of the sails of his opposition by co-opting their message?

Ronald Reagan said it well....

"Trust, but verify".

Or to quote another oldie but goodie....

"Where's the beef"???

My mind is open, and I never (4.00 / 3)
say that a person is beyond redemption.

But I'll watch actions.    Right now there are none.

I also did not make it to that meeting, and wanted to go.  But per the Record article, his statement is short on committment or concrete steps.  Yes it 'must end' but what steps will he take to deliver that end?

There would have to be action at the town levels as well.  In Bergenfield there was tremendous opposition from BDCO sponsored councilpeople to the most simplest of pay to play ordinances, banning town contracts from individuals to those who gave more than $300 to town candidates.  I asked even if it was the dollar amount we could talk about that.    I could not get a second to my motion.

So there's a long way to go.

It does take money to raise campaigns.  I think as the Democratic party we can be smart enough to see complexities and not say its all or nothing.   We either need pay to play or Republicans win.    That's a big Straw Man.   You can put limits on the money donated to 'mitigate' the influence.

And President Obama provides an example.  Build a BCDO we are proud of and regular democrats will donate money.

OH MY GOD, They are different people!!!!! (1.00 / 1)
What is Nick Lento and Carol H gonna do now that they can't tie everyone who is not Loretta Weinberg to Ferriero? haha

Post after post, comment after comment.

Don't judge a book by its cover.  A good lesson to learn

Associating God With A Pay To Play Advocate.... (0.00 / 0)
....such as you've been is blasphemous.    The Good Lord is all about goodness and justice, and pay to play is neither good nor just; it is corrupt to the core.   It may be legal, but it is immoral and unethical and corrosive to democracy and to our economy.

Are you ready now to follow your new leader and also declare that pay to play is corrupt and should be banned?

I've always said the problem goes way beyond the mere "person" of Boss Joe.  I've always said the problem is the system of pay to play in general.   So far all we have from Kasparian is a long and substantial history of having made lots of money through pay to play connections and some recent statements that indicate he might be ready to turn a new leaf and condemn his previous practices.   It remains to be seen if the word gets out to the rest of the BCDO cronies that have operated the pay to play machine in places like the Bergenfield town council.    It remains to be seen if Governor Corzine and Kasparian and the rest of New Jersey's Demicrats will actually support Loretta Weinberg's reform legislation....or if they are simply lying for the sake of appearances.

Clearly, no one can come up with a morally convincing justification/argument for legalized corruption....so the next "best" thing is to try to co-opt the issue by paying it superficial lip service.   If Weinberg's legislation isn't pushed and passed...and if people at the town council level keep on paying the same games; then the nice/shallow rhetoric will have been exposed as lies.    So far the "book" you're referring to consists of blank pages....let's see what Kasparian delivers at the legislative level.

It looks like we're stuck with him... (4.00 / 2)
... at least for the next year. So why not start simple and see how long it takes him to fulfill the six reform measures that he promised to enact?  Keep a running scorecard with how many days he's been Chairman versus how many of his promised reforms have been implemented.
It may not be much, but it's something. The opportunity to put someone else in that office has, unfortunately, passed. And if we decide that it's necessary to replace hiim next year, why not start putting together the case against his reelection?

A Heavy Lift (0.00 / 0)
As far an I can tell this is going to be a heavy lift for Kasparian or anyone else for that matter. The pay-to-play system has DEEP roots, entrenched interest$ and is not likely to go quietly into the night. It will take alot of cooperation, patience and protest to make pay to play a thing of the past. But if we do it, we will set an example our kids and dare I say, our country, can be proud of. If it can be done in Bergen County, it can be done anywhere.

I'm not sure hitching the trailer to Loretta Weinberg's bill is the answer. But what I do know is that this is not the time for a litmus test. Let's instead try to find some common ground, plant the flag of progress and people of good will will follow. The stragglers, and there are sure to plenty of those, will not be far behind.

The creeps (4.00 / 1)
still in the BCDO, and there are many left, are really running the show.

I'm not hopeful right now.  Kasparian knows what the public wants to hear. BUT, he would never make the Ferrierocrats ever give up their patronage machine.

THAT is the crux of the whole problem.

We need to pass the Party Democracy Act soon.  The creeps  are getting cocky.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Passing PDA Would Be A Great First Step... (0.00 / 0)
.....in terms of bringing reform to the way the party organizations operate; but we need a full spectrum of reform bills ranging from increasing/enhancing  the public financing of campaigns to increasing the legal sanctions for all manner of unethical practices that currently legal....and increasing the prison terms for the things that are currently illegal.

If violating the public trust could land you in prison for as much as forty years with no parole; I suspect that people would be hesitant to "go for it".

As it stands now, I see nothing much happening/passing vis a vis reform unless there is a statewide mass movement of New Jerseyans from all parties bringing these issues to light and demanding substantial systemic root to branch transformations of the way we do business and politics..

Maybe it will take the state going totally bankrupt to get us to realize that we are being robbed blind.   There are no good reasons for or nation and our state to be in the financial hole that we're in.    It's all the result of dishonesty and, mostly. legalized corruption.

The status quo is not sustainable and can ony further deteriorate unless we adopt truly radical measures....like, for example, insisting that we have honest governance, and putting the crooks in jail instead of rewarding them with lots of money and power.

Sadly, pols tend to pick up on ideas at the verbal level and throw a co-opted few catch phrases at folks to placate the impulse for change.  We must not settle for the same old bullshit.   We need to see the actual rules/regulations/laws be radically changed to reflect the values of fundamental decency and justice..

Where are the Creeps? (0.00 / 0)
I'm not a particulalry big fan of starting the conversation with name calling but following your line....Where are the creeepiest of the creeps? We need names and/or towns.

Alternative first steps might be: Posting the BCDO by-laws online; Freeholder assignments for reform analysis and initiative; collaboration btwn Bergen Grassroots and BCDO on reform initiatives; Better advertisement of election deadlines; Public debates for Freeholder Candidates; an Open Door policy for Committe persons to address local issues; and better monitoring of Municpal Chairs up to and including ethics trainingthink were among the issues discussed. Perhaps, Bill W can put those on THE LIST.

I know you guys have been fighting the good fight and I respect give you immense credit for it.

Come to a BCDO "election", you can't miss 'em (4.00 / 1)
They will be the goons making motions to silence any and all debate and acting in a mob-like physically threatening way if you don't wear their candidate's sticker proudly when they accost you at the door.

They don't give their names.  But it doesn't matter, they have no minds of their own. They act like a mob.  When they blog they do it anonymously, like BlueBergen, or JerseyBoy32.

These are the "creeps" I am talking about.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.
