Why Cory Booker Will Be New Jersey's Next US Senator

by: Matthew Jordan

Sun Jan 25, 2009 at 10:57:10 AM EST

With a newly elected 85 year old Senator the speculation about who will be Frank Lautenberg's replacement is inevitable.  With a deep bench of Democratic politicians awaiting his retirement the race for his seat is sure to be hard fought and sought after.  In my opinion there are two ways the race for Lautenberg's seat will play out:

     1.  Lautenberg retires and the Governor appoints his replacement;
     2.  Lautenberg serves his 6 year term in its entirety and there is a primary
          for the Democratic nomination in 2014.

There is a long list of powerful New Jersey politicians who covet Lautenberg's seat.  Congressmen Rothman, Pallone, and Andrews would surely throw their hats in the ring.  Whoever the Lt. Gov is (assuming Corzine wins reelection) will most likely consider a run, and in my opinion the best positioned potential candidate, Mayor Cory Booker, is widely known to have ambitions to higher office.

Matthew Jordan :: Why Cory Booker Will Be New Jersey's Next US Senator
For arguments sake lets says Lautenberg fills out his whole term and there is a primary for the nomination.  Booker is in the best position, strategically, for several reasons.  First, he is the Mayor of the largest city in the state with a large bloc of democratic primary voters.  Neither Andrews nor Pallone can claim that kind of primary voter base.  Rothman's county is fractured and would be difficult to unite (also Booker grew up in Harrington Park, a Bergen County town and has several connections there that could cut into Rothman's base).  Secondly, probably the most reliable Democratic County in New Jersey is Hudson.  Booker has a strong relationship with Jersey City Mayor Jerremiah Healy (who also chairs the HCDO) and it would seem the inside track to obtaining the county line there.  It seems unlikely that Andrews, Pallone, or Rothman could beat Booker if he has the line in Essex and Hudson Counties.

Booker has obtained national acclimation because of his status as a rising African American politician and will be able to raise large sums of money from national contacts.  Another important fact worth noting is in Booker's last election he employed Message & Media, Democratic consultants who have crafted the message for every Democrat elected to statewide office in the 21st century in New Jersey.

Six years is an eternity in politics, especially in New Jersey, but as the landscape appears now, Booker would be well positioned to become the next US Senator from New Jersey.

Where is Booker on the issues? (4.00 / 1)
What I've read about him leads me to think that he's more conservative than most of the other possible candidates. I'd like to support someone who is at least as progressive as Lautenberg.

Issues Do Matter (0.00 / 0)
Lautenberg, God willing, will be around a long long time yet, Matthew.....let's not dig his grave til that day comes.   Meanwhile, I agree wil Bill that we should elect some one at least,  if not more, progressive than Lautenberg.   I would love to be able to support an African American New Jerseyan for the Senate in five years, but the last thing we need is another machine type candidate with a nice "line" of verbiage.

The people of NJ are far far far more progressive than the people we elect.  The pay to play position is critical.    Also, I wasn't too pleased that Booker failed to address the NJ ACLU's concerns as articulated here  http://www.bluejersey.com/show...   Booker speaks in a great tone and he's a talented politician; but he needs to upgrade his progressive credentials and commitment.   He, also, should take a page out of Donald Payne's book and support HR 676.   The people of Newark and the rest of the USA deserve to be 100% covered, eh???  And, again, doing the right thing vis a vis health care is actually CHEAPER than the legally corrupt status quo which is a legalized institutionalized rip off.  No one who doesn't actively support and/or sponsor HR676 deserves the support of any progressive Democrat in NJ.

PS That's Don Payne AND Rush Holt.... (0.00 / 0)
....that have co-sponsored HR 676.
