Field Report with Pictures – Lobbyists Rally for Corrupt GOP Congressman Scott Garrett

Crossposted at Daily Kos

Last night, I joined a rally of Lobbyists for Republican Scott Garrett, who gathered to thank Garrett for supporting the financial industry that has run our economy into the ground. Scott Garrett, who represents New Jersey’s fifth Congressional district, doesn’t just accept campaign donations and personal loans from the financial giants that caused our current economic crisis – he hired a former Countrywide lobbyist as his chief of staff. Garrett is among the nation’s strongest supporters for deregulation of the financial industry that puts profit before people struggling thanks to today’s economic crisis.

Texas Oilmen For Scott Garrett

by Jocelyn Krieger, West Bergen and Passaic Field Organizer

The Shulman for Congress campaign office has been a great place to be in the last few weeks. In addition to the usual campaign business, we’ve been trying to connect to our voters in a new way: satire.

We began in person. Two weeks ago, we sent several of our illustrious interns to the State Fair in Sussex, dressed in cowboy hats and boleros with signs reading “Texas Oilmen for Scott Garrett.” The goal was to publicize how good Garrett has been for the Big Oil companies over the last 6 years: so good that, as their profits have tripled, the oil companies have given Garrett over $69,000.

That trip went so well, including a few personal interactions with Garrett himself, that we decided to take it to the Internet. By now I hope everyone has seen The Threat is Real, which eloquently demonstrates Scott Garrett’s opinions on global warming and the environment. And now the Texas Oilmen have made their online debut: www.oilmenforgarrett.com.

As you can see on the site, with a clip of an “oilman” thanking Garrett personally for all his support, one of our interns saw an opportunity to get the whole office involved in demonstrating- and mocking- Garrett’s relationship with Big Oil: he turned our office into a Texas Oilmen version of “The Office.”

In addition to giving us the chance to argue over who in the office best resembled which “Office” character (I, flatteringly, was unanimously declared Pam, but we did have a debate on who should be Dwight), a parody gives viewers important information about Garrett’s positions in an entertainment format. It’s a video that was incredibly

fun to make (if we get requests, we can try to make a blooper reel), and is just as fun to watch.

Please go to www.oilmenforgarrett.com, watch the video, and let us know what you think!

Honoring Our Commitments – A July 4th Message

Dennis Shulman sent out the following message to his supporters yesterday.  You can sign up to receive emails from Dennis at www.shulmanforcongress.com.

Dear Blue Jersey,

Happy Fourth of July!

We have much to be proud of on this important holiday — but we also must reflect on all that’s left for us to accomplish in continuing to form our more perfect union.

Today, we must honor all of the brave men and women who are serving our country around the world, as well as our heroes who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. We must honor their families and their communities. We must honor the returning veterans with proper medical care and the benefits they deserve.   And we must honor our commitment to bring our troops home safely.

This week, I began a listening tour throughout the Fifth District, and I enjoyed meeting many of you today at Independence Day celebrations.  I’m making stops throughout the district to hear your concerns about the war, the economy, energy, health care, and all of the issues that affect us.  I invite you to email me about your concerns at listening@shulmanforcongress.com.

When I am sworn in next January as your Representative in Congress, I will honor my commitment to serve you and your family faithfully.

Sincerely,

Dennis Shulman

We invite you to email your concerns to listening@shulmanforcongress.com.

Why Dennis Shulman Can and Will Take the Fifth

Is the 5th winnable?

Of course it is, with the right candidate — and here’s why we believe that candidate is Dennis Shulman.

Dennis only began to explore a race for Congress in September, 2007, and announced his decision to run two months later.

The thinking is this — Shulman’s background as psychologist, educator, author, and rabbi who would be the first blind Member of Congress in generations-gives him natural fundraising constituencies and strong press appeal.

Gerald Cardinale Recklessly Assaults Joseph Ariyan

In response to the desperate campaign tactics of my local State Senator, Gerald Cardinale, I put out a statement in support of his challenger, Democrat Joe Ariyan.

The continuing threats posed by terrorism and anti-Semitism are too real and too great for anyone to play cheap politics and invoke them recklessly.

And yet State Senator Gerald Cardinale has had the gall to suggest that Joseph Ariyan is dangerous to both the residents of New Jersey generally and Jews specifically on the most specious grounds imaginable.

It is an outrage that these sort of serious charges would be made so recklessly for no reason other than that a career politician worries that his time in Trenton may be nearing a close.

Tragically, this kind of attack flows too easily from the lips of career politicians, and has the effect of turning too many people off of politics.

The issues facing New Jersey and America are just too serious for gutter politics.

In this nation and in this state, we can do better, which is why I am supporting Joe Ariyan for State Senate on Tuesday.

When I learned about the claims the Cardinale campaign was making against Joe, I felt I was in a unique position to speak up for him as an ordained rabbi and strong believer in civil rights.

Scott Garrett (R-NJ5) should Denounce Coulter’s Hateful Remarks

Today I call on Scott Garrett to denounce in no uncertain terms the slurs hurled at the Jewish religion and community by right wing Republican pundit Ann Coulter. Scott Garrett, the incumbent in this district, should immediately and forcefully demand that his ally Ms. Coulter apologize for the hurtful comments she made.

Words have consequences, and, as we all know too well, this kind of bigoted rhetoric has all too often led to violence throughout history.
