What We Take On, We Win: Coalition to Restore Democracy Kicks Off Thursday (with UPDATE)

This is about ending the shenanigans of politicians who assume nobody will stop them.

UPDATE: This announcement is moved to Newark Penn Station 11am Thursday! If you’re getting on the NJ Chamber of Commerce Walk to Washington trip, you will see us – please say hello!

For the past several months, a sisterhood of activist women have been meeting all over New Jersey. These are powerhouse leaders, some of whom fueled the shut down of Statehouse Dems trying to gerrymander NJ legislative districts and drove grassroots victory for our blue wave crop of freshman Congressional Democrats.

We all walked into the room with constituencies, leading groups, and community & advocacy organizations; Blue Jersey’s readership is mine, thanks to all of you. But as clear-eyed as my sisters are, there’s only so much change you can make if the political system blocks groundswells, if the real decisions are top-down, unjust, insidery (or boys-club) and transacted in secret.

So – what’s next: We’re launching this Coalition to Restore Democracy in New Jersey, and looking to you to join us and help it grow. This is about making sure our government is clean, and represents us fairly. This is about ending the shenanigans of politicians who assume nobody will stop them. We don’t usually post press releases, but since we stand behind this, here’s ours:

Coalition to Restore Democracy: Grassroots and community leaders to host press conference to launch efforts to tackle corruption in New Jersey politics

TRENTON- On Thursday, February 28, at 10am, community leaders and activists, many of which played integral roles in the 2018 midterm victories and defeated state Democrats’ efforts to gerrymander legislative districts, will join together to launch a coalition focused on tackling and transforming New Jersey’s pay-to-play system of governing.

Coming off the heels of news that dozens of New Jersey’s political insiders held an exclusive “Boys Club” in Puerto Rico, the complete lack of surprise in the media and amongst the public speaks to the urgency of the actions to be taken by this Coalition. These grassroots activists and organizers see this example as another undemocratic way in which political insiders and elected officials legislate and deal-make behind closed doors.

The groups will detail ways to improve the electoral, legislative and political system so as to prioritize the interest and voices of citizens over self-dealing and undue influence in order to stem the systemic corruption hampering New Jersey’s growth and to allow New Jersey to function as a true and productive democracy.
