One month after Donald Trump was inaugurated, the Washington Post changed its slogan to read: Democracy Dies in Darkness, immortalizing something Bob Woodward says around the Post’s newsroom, and opening the paper’s dark tone to endless mocking. But I like it. And I don’t think it applies only to the free press.

It should surprise nobody watching the spike in New Jersey activism, the steep learning curve so many bankers, bakers, students and other everyday people nailed, that all that energy would turn after the midterm to our own local Democratic Party. Is our democracy dying in darkness? Many conscientious NJ Democrats have little idea whether the party mechanisms that choose our electeds, and thus NJ’s policies, are transparent, or fair, or accountable – or even how much is guided by unseen power bosses accountable to none of us. Last year, 2018, was a muscle-flex. And clearly much of it was neither directed by nor responsible to the Democratic Party. New political leadership is emerging, and Democrats can either benefit from that, or fight it. Parties are often resistant to reform, accountability and transparency. But it may be demanded. Time will tell.
