The only reason that Chris Smith is still in Congress is because Rush Holt and Frank Pallone were cowards who didn’t want to have to run for re-election in competitive districts.

Both Holt and Pallone won their seats in competitive districts, but colluded with their Republican colleagues to gerrymander the state beyond competitiveness for the better part of the last two decades.

While Democrats win statewide in NJ often by as much as 15-20 percentage points, the congressional delegation was split 6-6 until Trump made it possible for Gottheimer, Kim, Malinowski, and Sherrill to pull off their narrow victories in 2016 and 2018.

Both Pallone and Watson Coleman should be pressured to advocate for a more competitive congressional district map in 2022 that will make it possible for Smith to finally be defeated (or retired).
