Not that long ago, when Michael Moore was more a Michigander and less and East Coaster – like I was then, like I am now – he premiered all his movies at a cool little indie theater in my neighborhood, the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak, Michigan. He was always there, and they were fundraisers for local lefty causes. Best one? During the epic 2-year Detroit Newspaper Strike (1995-97), a benefit for locked-out journalists at the Detroit Free Press (the Freep) and Detroit News. That was The Big One, about corporate capitalism’s failures and American unemployment.
Back in Jersey, we at Democracy for America (DFA-NJ) bought out the biggest screen in central Jersey’s indie-plex Montgomery Cinemas (love them), and sold every seat to a progressive, registering 300 people to vote outside the theater (getting big kudos from Michael Moore for that). That was his Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) about the ‘War of Terror’ and how nuts George W. Bush was.
But that was nothing. Donald Trump is way more nuts that Bush. So Moore flipped his digits and made another doc – with another title alluding to Ray Bradbury’s 1953 dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451. And tonight, Moore’s Fahrenheit 11/9 is sneaking in many theaters. If you’re anywhere near Ocean County, the Bus For Progress is carting people to a screening in Manahawkin, with post-movie talk in Waretown. More info here.
Whether you motor with Bus for Progress or not, Moore’s hosting a livestream chat after screenings tonight. Details in the graphic above. The graphic below, to find screenings, shows Trump – the butt view – golfing as he does every other day or so here in Bedminster, but with the White House dropped in the background, and the words: TYRANT. LIAR. RACIST. A HOLE IN ONE. Moore’s good with the wordplay, and I love him for it. Graphic below is a link.
