We have this tweet from Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, who sits on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, today the setting for some weapons-grade drama. Outbursts. Shouting matches. Procedural bickering. Accusations. Threats. This was a joint hearing of the Oversight and Judiciary committees questioning career FBI counterintelligence agent Peter Strzok, who Pres. Donald Trump says was at the center of a secret FBI plot to clear Hillary Clinton and stop him from becoming president. Strzok oversaw the FBI investigation of Hillary Clinton’s conduct in using a private email server for sensitive and classified information while she was secretary of state. He was also involved in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, from which he’s been removed. Strzok, on the hot seat after texts surfaced in which he was critical of Trump, denies his professional conduct was biased. The texts were with then-FBI agent Lisa Page, with whom Strzok had an extramarital affair. Strzok says in 2016, he had info that “had the potential to derail and quite possibly defeat Mr. Trump. But the thought of exposing that information never crossed my mind.” He didn’t say what that info was. As Philip Bump points out in WaPo, Strzok has a point: If he wanted to use the investigation to stop Trump, why didn’t he use the investigation to stop Trump?
