While bands’ tours get a lot of press and publicity, a real rock star on a cross-country tour made a stop in New Jersey yesterday.
Ady Barkan is a young father who, two years ago, was diagnosed with ALS – a debilitating disease that is also a death sentence. Confined to a wheelchair and overcoming the difficulties that the disease imposes on speech, Barkan has become an advocate for health care as well as other progressive ideals. As he explains in this video, he’s no stranger to Trenton, as he has advocated for several initiatives here in the past.
Yesterday, following an appearance in the State House flanked by Democratic elected officials, Barkan traveled to Burlington County where he was the keynote speaker at a Medicare/Medicaid forum organized by New Jersey Citizen Action and New Jersey Organizing Project, with assistance from Action Together Burlington County.
Here are his remarks from last night.
