Municipal Non-Partisan Election Day News Roundup & Open Thread for Tuesday, May 8, 2018

At 6:47pm last night, The New Yorker published allegations from four women with whom he had romantic relationships or encounters that New York’s liberal AG Eric Schneiderman physically assaulted them. Three hours later, he resigned. Schneiderman had assumed a key role in the #MeToo movement, prosecuting Harvey Weinstein, the case that started a cascade of women telling their stories of abuse by men, and using social media to say supportive things about women who spoke up. After the New Yorker piece, by Jane Mayer & Ronen Farrow, broke, calls for Schneiderman to step down came quickly, including from Gov. Cuomo, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). This crap generally doesn’t happen when we elect women.

This day in history – May 8, 1945: V-E Day, when the USA & Great Britain celebrate capitulation over Nazism. If fascism is coming again, we smash it again. Above, the statue of the late folksinger Pete Seeger unveiled this week in Teaneck by the Puffin Foundation. Speaking of those who fought fascism.

Do Newark Schools’ water fountains still have lead?  A floating classroom on a 40-foot pontoon boat so local kids could go on educational excursions around Lake Hopatcong. The call it “Study Hull.”

Well, the NRA’s gone and done it: Oliver North will be the NRA’s next president. The central figure in the Iran-Contra affair, he only illegally sold guns to Iran, laundered money for a foreign power, and lied to Congress. He’s perfect.

Paterson mayor’s race – Election Day is today: Farhanna Balgahoom Sayegh, wife of candidate Andre Sayegh, forwarded a racist and homophobic flyer drawn up to look like it represented her husbands campaign, to AG Grewal last night.

CD3: Gabby Giffords & her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, come to Moorestown to support gun safety and Andy Kim. Video. Giffords & Kelly also spent time talking with West Orange HS students along with CD11’s Mikie Sherrill, who they endorsed a few months ago. And they were standing with Phil Murphy when he named Bill Castner his gun control czar

Republican Bob Hugin, who retired from running Summit-based Celgene in time to run for Bob Menendez’ Senate seat, is mighty rich, reporting $33 million for 2015 & 2016.The disclosure gave the Menendez campaign an opening to raise again the troubling story of how Celgene under Hugin hid information about potentially fatal side effects of not one, but two, Celgene cancer drugs.

Isn’t it a little early for serious people to be talking up Phil Murphy for a 2020 run at the White House?

Michael Patrick Carroll, says he’ll leave the Assembly after 24 years to run in 2020 for Morris County Surrogate, though he hints he could stick around if “circumstances” change

Phil Murphy said the non-profit started by his supporters to support his agenda would disclose its donors, though not required to by law. Hasn’t happened. Murphy says it will by year-end

Where’s your Governor? Releasing gun data 3pm at the Hackensack Performing Arts Center

Gov. Phil Murphy says he supports the state Senate’s move to hold hearings to investigate hidden-camera videos appearing to show local leaders of New Jersey’s top teachers union discussing protecting teachers accused of abusing students. Who made that NJEA video? Rutgers-educated James O’Keefe

The White House is an irony-free zone: Melania’s new “Be Best” pamphlet, about how to talk to kids about being online is almost exactly what the Obama administration published. First the White House website said Melania wrote the booklet, then that was hastily changed to Melania promoting it, after press questions came about the word-for-wordness of the initiative Melania put her name on. Incidentally, the initiative, meant to help kids, came out the same day from Melania, that her husband proposed massive cuts to the CHIP program for children’s health

Who on Earth would offer Rush Limbaugh a police escort to get to a party on time. This guy, and now he has abruptly “retired.”
