UPDATE: Well, this is perfect: Just in, Oliver North will be NRA’s next president. Lied to Congress in the 1980s Iran-Contra affair, and denizen of Fox News. This, from the Giffords org exec director about sums it up. headdesk
UPDATE: The Facebook Live-stream has started
UPDATE: The full video will be posted later this evening.
For you CD3 voters, Deciminyan is headed to the Moorestown Community House to live-stream a gun violence prevention rally with Congresswoman Gabby Giffords & Navy Captain and astronaut Mark Kelly, her husband and co-founder in the gun issue PAC Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence. The org will be endorsing Democrat Andy Kim today, the lone Democrat left standing and ready to run against GOP Rep. Tom MacArthur. MacArthur moved a little off his party’s 2nd Amendment-at-all-costs position after Parkland, which is progress but unclear and not enough. T-Mac has a 93% rating from NRA. And he’s got a 0% from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, named for Reagan Press Secretary Jim Brady, shot in the 1981 Reagan assassination attempt. Brady’s 2014 death was ruled a homicide caused by the gunshot wound 33 years earlier.
Had she not battled back from the assassination attempt on her life in 2011, Giffords’ death would have been a homicide too. She was shot in the head as she met with constituents outdoors at a Tucson Safeway supermarket. After just a few moments of chaos, Giffords was down, 6 others killed and 13 injured; among the dead a federal judge and 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green. The former congresswoman has a severe brain injury and had years of rehabilitation to learn how to walk, talk, speak and write again. She was impressive before she was shot; she is extraordinary now. And her husband is often with her for support, in the same deep commitment to reducing gun violence that she has. Mark Kelly’s a pretty cool dude altogether; he and his brother Scott – both astronauts – were inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame last night. They’re from Orange.
An endorsement from Giffords and Kelly means a great deal to those working toward sane gun policy. Andy Kim will be endorsed today. Giffords and Kelly were also scheduled to be at West Orange HS today for a roundtable discussion with students featuring Mikie Sherrill, who their organization has already endorsed for the CD11 congressional race.
