Speaker Paul Ryan is not running for re-election.

Multiple news organizations are reporting that Speaker Paul Ryan will formally announce to Republican colleagues this morning that he will not seek re-election; that scoop coming first from Axios and Jonathan Swan. Ryan’s office confirmed the news a few minutes ago.

Jockeying for the speakership began over the last 48 hours, with the rumors of Ryan’s retirement. My money’s on Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who has the benefit of enormous goodwill from Republican colleagues, returning to Congress following months of hospitalization after being shot last summer at a practice game of the congressional baseball team. Leader Kevin McCarthy is also angling to move up.

Neither is acceptable. Nobody they have is. We need a better Congress, and better counterbalance against an unstable president. You know what moves you. And you know that the loss of the the top Republican in the House means it will be harder for the GOP to hang onto their majority. Saturday’s going to be 79 degrees and sunny in New Jersey. A good day to go help somebody better get elected.

Also? Randy “Iron Stache” Bryce for Congress.
