If you don’t know Nina Turner: In 2012, when she was an Ohio state senator, Turner made national news introducing a men’s reproductive health bill that would have required men to undergo psychological counseling before getting prescriptions for medications like Viagra, saying even the FDA recommends assessments to determine if symptoms are physical or psychological: “I certainly want to stand up for men’s health and take this seriously and legislate it the same way mostly men say they want to legislate a woman’s womb.” Now for context, Turner did that in the male-dominated, Republican majority Ohio Senate, after watching her colleagues pass bill after bill regulating women’s health, including many that prioritized fetuses over the lives of women. Mm hm, that’s Nina Turner all over; fierce, undaunted by the way politics is usually practiced, and the interests it usually serves, who once told the Ohio legislature to ‘grow a pair.’ Despite her rising national profile, Turner is frequently mentioned as potential candidate for Ohio governor or mayor of hometown Cleveland.
After leaving the Ohio senate in heartland, swing state Ohio, Turner became a fierce advocate for Bernie Sanders after abandoning Hillary Clinton in 2015. She’s a helluva orator, uplifting and charismatic. She is a force for reform in how politics is practiced. She was Bernie’s rep in the Unity Commission to address issues like superdelegates, but her commitment to progressive values overshadows party affiliation. Turner sees both Bernie’s 2016 run and OR’s future about helping everyday Americans who feel left behind – and she’s all about creating structures to give power back to the people. Last summer, Turner became the head of Our Revolution, replacing Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver. OR has access to the precious that the Democratic National Committee wants more than anything in the world, Bernie Sanders’ 2.8 million person donor contact list. Nobody actually on that list wants DNC or any of the denizens at Democratic National Headquarters to have access to Bernie’s list, because we know they want to control the progressive base without listening to or representing it, to spam us for money, all of us they called bros. At the 2016 Democratic National Convention, Nina Turner was banned from the stage at the last minute by DNC (read: Hillary), because having a vibrant Black woman nominate him for president wouldn’t jibe with her claim there was no reason for anybody Black to support him (oy – frustrating flashback). It’s why you saw so many of us with signs saying I’M NINA. Nina has Bernie’s list, and that’s just fine. Welcome to New Jersey, Nina.
