Saturday night, there will be a student-led town hall on gun violence focused on CD7, Leonard Lance’s congressional district. But Lance won’t be there.
The congressman eclined to attend, electing to hold his own town hall at the opposite end of the district tonight 5:30pm in Phillipsburg (info to attend here). Running for re-election, Lance is working to distance himself from an increasingly unpopular President Trump, from one of just 23 GOP-held congressional districts Trump lost in 2016. Lance may not want to answer the questions of issue-activated young people, particularly on a playing field of their own. If he wants to stay congressman, I hope that he will do so soon; not in an event of his own like tonight, but in a forum on guns run by students. Why? Because that’s what they want to talk about, a lot of them, and they deserve to be heard, and their questions answered.
Who is showing up Saturday night? Most of the other people who want to replace Lance are showing up; Democratic primary candidates Peter Jacob, Goutam Jois, and Tom Malinowski, and Republican primary candidates Dr. Rafat Barsoom and Lindsay Brown. The focus will be mainly on gun control, and the effects of gun violence has had on the lives of people living in CD7.
I just called Lance’s Hunterdon district office to ask what is on his Saturday night schedule. I called at a bad time; I’m sure staff is headed to his town hall location and busy right now. If I hear back, I’ll update. But if you’d like to ask him yourself what’s more important than answering these students’ questions the D.C. office is: (202) 225-5361. District offices are (908) 788-6900 (Flemington) & (908) 518-7733 (Westfield).
