SJWPC Endorses Tanzie Youngblood in NJ-2

In a system where the bosses of both political parties have undue influence, we often end up with candidates who are part of that system and feel they are “entitled” to be anointed for higher office. And in Democratic politics, a candidate’s views and voting record are not factors. Such is the case in the Second Congressional District, where one brave woman stood up to challenge long-time Representative Frank LoBiondo only to be broadsided by the party establishment.

Once LoBiondo announced his retirement and the seat became more competitive, the South Jersey powerbrokers jumped in and shoved State Senator Jeff Van Drew down the throats of NJ-2 voters. Van Drew has one of the worst records for a Democrat, opposing marriage equality and voting in lockstep with the NRA.

But Van Drew still faces a primary challenge. This week, the South Jersey Women for Progressive Change endorsed Tanzie Youngblood for Congress. You can read their press release, but I want to say that I have been a big fan of Youngblood ever since she announced her candidacy last year. She’s emblematic of the wave of women who have had little or no political experience but who have the smarts, the drive, and the ambition to make a difference in the way our elected bodies work.

SJWPC’s endorsement is important to Youngblood and I hope it’s the start of a wave to return South Jersey to the people who live here.

This is one of those races that is just so frustrating. Here’s to hoping Youngblood can build some momentum.
