About 100 protestors attended a rally today in Newark calling for a shutdown of the Delaney Hall Detention Facility at the Essex County Correctional Facility. The modest turnout of about 100 was organized by Resist the Deportation Machine (RDM) and featured a host of advocacy groups including People’s Organization for Progress.
What was interesting, however, was that this event was on the heels of the biggest mainstream showing of support for non-criminal unauthorized immigrants and yet, rallies like the one today in Newark still feature what most would regard as very fringe of the political spectrum. More the messaging was somewhat disjointed and just not anything that would translate to a more dispassionate public.
What is the disconnect between what happened this week when Gov. Murphy and Rep. Frank Pallone visited Middlesex County following several ICE-related stings and today’s action that could barely muster attention when it’s most needed and on a week when local immigration was front and center?
