Purple pussy hats: I got pumped up this morning, retweeting the awesome work of NJ 11th for Change’s Knitters United group, churning out a crop of their signature color purple pussy hats for members. I don’t personally resonate with the whole pussy hat thing, which in my experience was more of a Hillary thing. But who cares? It resonates like crazy with my sisters and that warms up my January like I can’t even tell you. Morristown is NJ 11th for Change’s backyard, and where they’ve been holding Fridays Without Frelinghuysen for a solid year now. Voters are starting to know them better than their absent congressman, which is his own damn fault. And not just there. Personally, I’m in CD7. We’re in one of just 23 districts nationwide where the Republican won, but so did Hillary Clinton in 2016, and we aim to Ed Royce Leonard Lance.
This year’s March will not likely rival last year’s; the women-led Washington march dwarfed participation in Donald Trump’s inauguration the day before (flashback to that) (and Trump lying about it). But then, few things in world history could. It was the largest single-day demonstration in recorded U.S. history. Revulsion at Trump was strong enough that it drove more than 4 million people out of their warm houses into the cold from cities and towns around the world. No, this year probably won’t match this year. but that’s not what’s important. What matters is that a vigorous resistance has grown up – in most cases separate from the Democratic Party. And civic engagement is high, which will likely benefit the Democratic Party, as the focus has shifted to the 2018 midterms and the first big step to defang an unqualified president by taking back Congress and dismantling his support system.
The National Women’s March 2018 is in Vegas this year, and aims to move around the U.S.. And there are at least 200 sister marches Saturday the 20th with more the day after. Theme this year is Power to the Polls, which begins a massive project to register voters in swing states, and use the organizing power that these marches still generate to elect more women, and more progressives, to office. Besides Morristown there are marches in in NYC and Philadelphia. I see not every sister march is listed on the march-finder website (Morristown isn’t, but Leonia is) and I just heard a new march was announced this morning for Pompton Plains (Saturday the 20th at 11am). I’ll try to update this as the March date comes closer, if more are added.
