Friday Morning – Protest Outside Kim Guadagno’s West Long Branch Office

We have this emergency action coming in the morning, quickly put together to show community disgust at LG Kim Guadagno’s current campaign ad, the one that became a flashpoint after Tuesday’s gubernatorial debate. The ad – see it here – is an excuse for Guadagno to display brown people with Latino names, and employ terms like ”criminal illegals.” To scare Republicans who, so far, don’t seem jazzed about her candidacy at all. To gin up for white suburbanites the idea that the other” is indeed out to get them, and maybe the law-and-order former Monmouth Sheriff will protect them better than Murphy, whom the ad calls “dangerous.”

Straight out of the Republican playbook. And the Trump playbook. Race-baiting, fear-mongering. Phil Murphy says he’d make New Jersey a sanctuary state; this in one of the most diverse states in the country, diverse in part because of our immigrants. We have the third largest population of immigrants of any state. One in 5 voters here is an immigrant or a child of immigrants. In a country softening its position on illegal immigration, even a year after electing Trump.  In the morning, activists will demand that Guadagno pull and disavow the ad.

When: Friday, Oct. 13, 10AM
Where: Outside Kim Guadagno’s West Long Branch campaign office. Monmouth Park Corporate Center, 185 Route 36, Building B, West Long Branch, NJ 07764
Who: NJ Working Families Alliance, Action Together NJ, Latino Action Network, LUPE PAC, Make the Road NJ, New Jersey Resistance, NAACP New Jersey, Progressive Hunterdon Democrats (PHD), and a bunch of other allies.

Quoting from Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin’s statement on Guadagno’s ad:

“With this ad, Kim Guadagno has embraced Donald Trump’s politics of division. She has stood silently behind Chris Christie for nearly eight years, but now we’re getting a glimpse at her true character.

“Selectively editing someone’s comments to imply support for criminals is dishonest, undemocratic and unacceptable.

“But this ad also preys upon racial division and anti-immigrant sentiment. It’s divisive and repulsive, and rips asunder still unhealed wounds in my district and city from this heinous crime. Consider that the families of these children will be seeing this ad. Where is Kim Guadagno’s compassion? Where is her empathy and sensitivity? It shockingly seems to be lacking.

“Kim Guadagno must pull this ad and apologize to the family of the victims and the people of New Jersey for lowering public discourse to such levels.”
