And there are lots and lots and lots of people there, but no Rodney (as usual). Why did Rodney Frelinghuysen get this? Because he’s the Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, which is all about what we spend money on. The most powerful member of the NJ congressional delegation, and the one most likely to duck his constituents.
This is the combined work of Make the Road New Jersey (Twitter), Wind of the Spirit immigration resource center, NJ 11th for Change and more than a dozen orgs both national and centered here in the Garden State. Today’s the culmination of a 5-day week of action – now when congress members are in the home districts for recess – all focused to block the ramped-up budget for deportation. From Make the Road New Jersey’s site:
Here in New Jersey, deportations are up 30% since Trump took office. And things will only get worse if Congress approves the 2018 budget that sets aside $4.5 billion to detain and deport even more immigrants, hire thousands of additional ICE agents, make tens of thousands of new beds in private detention facilities, and build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.
