Optimists say Congress will now act on gun legislation; pessimists say no. A seeming consensus is highly dubious. Nonetheless we and our legislators should redouble our efforts.

Despite all the soft sounds of bipartisan friendship across the aisle, and I get that the Republicans are shaken up by this (so were we all), the rubber meets the road on policy. I don’t want to be a pessimist even on this but their track record is not encouraging.

We know this because after it happened, they of course talked about themselves and their own reactions and emotions – understandable – but so far they’re not talking about the ongoing risk to everyone else of the gun culture most of them support with their votes, as the NRA supports most of them with their money.

A lesson for New Jerseyans from Christie? He had mad skills to suck in believers, specifically enablers. Lesson learned?
