Juneteenth News Roundup for Monday, June 19, 2017

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that  Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war was over and the enslaved were now free – this news did not reach them till more than 2 after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
