A professor at Essex County College has been fired for going on Fox News and defending an all-Black Memorial Day event sponsored by Black Lives Matter.
Lisa Durden, who taught pop culture and communications, told Tucker Carlson, “You white people are angry because you couldn’t use your white privilege card to get invited to the Black Lives Matter’s all-black Memorial Day Celebration.” For this Durden was suspended for six days, then fired.
In an Orwellian (or perhaps Trumpian) twist, the new college president Anthony Munroe said about the firing that the college “supports and affirms the right of free speech and independent views and expressions of those views for our faculty and staff.”
Not only was she fired for utilizing the supported and affirmed right of free speech, but during the interview Durden never mentioned her connection to Essex County College and was not identified as a professor that the school. In fact, when Tucker Carlson said, “I hope you’re not speaking for anyone else” she replied, “My name is Lisa Durden and I’m speaking for Lisa Durden.”
Frankly, I watched the interview and I have no idea what was so objectionable to suspend Durden, much less fire her. The video is available on FOX (I can’t seem to embed it here, sorry) (Added the embed code for ya – Rosi) and all I see is Durden commenting on racism, not being racist. She states that in most cases people of all races are welcome at Black Lives Matter events, but that at this one event they wanted to have a safe space for black people without the possibility of counter protest. Carlson likened that to Whites only events, and compared Durden to a Nazi.
Munroe, apparently, agrees with that alt-right assessment because he went out of his way to stress the need for diversity and fighting racism as the reason for her dismissal.
“The college was immediately inundated with feedback from students, faculty and prospective students and their families expressing frustration, concern and even fear that the views expressed by a college employee (with influence over students) would negatively impact their experience on the campus,” Munroe said.
“Racism cannot be fought with more racism.”
I’d love for someone to OPRA the records of these complaints, and to get the names of the complainers. I’m willing to bet there are very few non-whites in that group, most are from outside of Essex County, none are “prospective students”, and that this is an orchestrated attack from the FOX News loving crowd.
Here is President Munroe’s contact info. If you see no reason for Durden’s firing — especially if you are from Essex County and pay taxes to support the college — give him a call or write an e-mail. Phone: (973) 877.4462 and his e-mail is firstname.lastname@example.org.
