Referring to 1979:
“It was a tale of politics that worked.”
Referring to today:
“The top threat … is the failure of political will to protect natural resources.”
Both of those quotes came from a talk given last week by Rebecca Free of the Pinelands Preservation Alliance. She spoke to a group of about 100 people at the monthly meeting of Action Together Burlington County.
In her presentation, she took us through the history of the pinelands, why it is an important New Jersey treasure, and the damage done during the Christie administration. With the ascendency of Donald Trump and his anti-environmental policies, don’t look for things to get better soon. But that doesn’t mean we should just give up and walk away. In February, 1200 people came to a meeting of the Pinelands Commission to protest a high-pressure natural gas pipeline. Although that battle was lost, the war is not over. The Pinelands Preservation Alliance and other groups are using the courts to try to help protect this fragile and pristine area.
If you want to learn about the beauty of the Pinelands and the ugliness of the politics, Becky’s presentation is worth spending the time to listen to.
