Time to slay this dragon – again: Protect Our Healthcare Rallies

Big hat tip of thanks to New Jersey Citizen Action, which is doing much of the work and partnering for the organized resistance against the Republican vow to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Please check out the rallies below and come if you can; we stood this down the first time, and it’s coming back around.

This week we see that the GOP’s next assault may center around NJ03’s Rep. Tom MacArthur, co-chair of the centrist Tuesday Group. There’s no official membership list for the Tuesday Group caucus, but besides MacArthur’s co-leadership, GOP congressmen Leonard Lance (NJ07),  Frank LoBiondo (NJ02) and Rodney Frelinghuysen (NJ11) have all been publicly identified as members in media reports. In last months’s defeat of ‘TrumpRyancare, New Jersey made some news; 80% (4 out of 5) of our Republicans pulled out of the deal. Only MacArthur stuck to the failing plan. Now MacArthur’s Tuesday Group appears to be nearing a deal with the rightwing Freedom Caucus (more on this from Bill). This, as Trump is threatening to blow up the individual health care market.

There’s no question Frelinghuysen, Smith, LoBiondo and Lance felt the heat of your showing up at their door ready to fight for the ACA. We won’t let up.

There will be rallies/vigils outside the Congressional offices of Frelinghuysen, Lance, LoBiondo, MacArthur and Smith on Wednesday, April 26 from 4:30 – 6:30pm. Those who can will gather early at 3:30pm to send a delegation into each office to speak to staff and deliver a letter.

Rally Locations:

Morristown – Frelinghuysen (map & address)
Westfield – Lance (map & address)
Flemington ** – Lance (map & address)
Mays Landing – LoBiondo  (map & address) No early delegation here, meet at 4:30pm

Statement FYI from the NJ State Democratic Committee follows:

According to news reports, despite their initial failure, Trump Republicans remain eager to undermine health care insurance coverage for an estimated 24 million fewer Americans before Trump reaches his 100th day in office. And the new plan that Representative Tom MacArthur is working on with the radical House Freedom Caucus may actually be “even crueler than the last one.”

One study shows that, under the new plan, “premiums would likely soar for the sick, probably pushing them off coverage.” The plan also gives states the ability obtain waivers to allow insurers to charge higher premiums to people with pre-existing conditions.

“My message to Congressman Tom MacArthur is clear: your priority should not be to hurt as many people in your district as possible. I mean, letting insurance companies hike prices for preexisting conditions? What are you thinking?” asked the chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, John Currie. “He needs to stop trying to please Donald Trump and enrich insurance companies. The people of the third district need someone who will fight for them, not make their lives more costly.”

Even as every other New Jersey Republican hemmed and hawed about the failed attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Tom MacArthur practically touted his contempt for his constituents’ concerns, attacking those who voiced opposition to his extreme position. However, the dangerous push to repeal the Affordable Care Act is just one instance in which MacArthur’s priorities are out-of-whack. He has also fallen in line with his Republican colleagues on a growing list of matters that are unpopular and disturbing:

    · Defund Planned Parenthood
    · Hide Russian conflicts of interest
    · Keep Trump’s tax returns a secret.
    · Tear innocent families apart with his mass deportation force
    · Force American taxpayers to pay for impractical border wall
    · Delay investment in infrastructure to create jobs

Congressman MacArthur’s constituents, should continue to contact his office to make it clear that his obligation is to them, not special interests.
