The part where your boyfriend hikes out into the snow to show up for an emergency action at your Congressman Leonard Lance’s Flemington office when the crappy weather keeps you home. This morning, Joey Novick of Progressive Hunterdon Democrats met up with our neighbor Christine Guhl Sadovy of Planned Parenthood and other people to whom the ACA is critically important.
Yesterday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee – after 16 hours of debate overnight – voted on party lines to approve the Republican takedown of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). My congressman, Leonard Lance, is on that committee and voted in step with the Republicans. Not the first time; Lance brags about voting more than 60 times to repeal, defund or dismantle Obamacare. When Lance was a NJ legislator, he was known for the courage it took to buck his party’s orthodoxy when he thought it was right. Elevated to Congress, he’s become a back-bencher comfortable to live out his terms supporting the Republican Party’s rightward shift. Last month, more than 2,000 people showed up to tell him he’s wrong about ACA, like they do every Wednesday to lobby his office (and it seems he closes his office early to avoid them). Yesterday he got his chance to make history and do right, but he made the wrong choice. This was the scene early this morning as some of Lance’s constituents showed up in Flemington to talk to staff about what our congressman needs to consider when he votes on the ACA. My thanks to Joey Novick, all my neighbors there and to the congressman’s staffer.
