UPDATE 4:30pm Wed: NJ02’s Rep. Frank LoBiondo just peeled away, signaling he will VOTE NO on Thursday (his statement). Two of the House Republicans are now from New Jersey – and that’s your work. Only one more House Republican and the bill goes down. Keep showing up, calling up, and tweeting to these guys.
In about 24 hours – Thursday night – the House plans to vote to take health insurance from 24,000,000 Americans. Almost 500,000 just in New Jersey. This is it, people, but it’s far from a done deal. The whip count shows 25 Republicans ready to peel away. That number includes Leonard Lance (NJ07) (New York’s Rep. Katko is misidentified in CBS’ whip count as being from NJ). No Dems will vote Yes. The problems for the Republicans are coming from both directions; it’s not a “clean enough” repeal of the ACA for some on the right flank, and some moderates know that moving up the timeline to rollback the Medicaid expansion would leave too many Americans without health insurance. Another GOP concern? That the new bill doesn’t do enough to control rising premium costs, which was the chief concern from the start of many congressional Republicans. Look how fluid this whip count is. Citizens speaking up and showing up is WORKING.
Best thing you can do TODAY: Join the night-before Vigil outside GOP congressmen’s office (Repped by a Dem? Join activists nearby at theirs)
4:30-6:30 TODAY at Republican congressmen’s offices: Here’s where & all the details.
Here’s what else you can do TODAY: Call or Tweet your member of Congress TODAY! Sample script, phone numbers & Twitter handles here.
Thursday at the Statehouse: Rally at lunchtime (staring 11:30am) if you can. Details coming.
Last week, when news hit of the CBO score of the Republican plan, a lot of the air rushed out of the Republicans’ balloon. But it’s not just that; it’s the force of the protests the Republicans – yes, here in NJ – have been seeing outside their offices every week for weeks. If you can join that today, that’s the best thing you can do today. To inspire you, here’s a magnificent poem by Marge Piercy – about organizing, about Resistance. Now go!
The Low Road
By Marge Piercy (posted at a Rutgers site!)
What can they do
to you? Whatever they want. They can set you up, they can bust you, they can break
your fingers, they can
burn your brain with electricity, blur you with drugs till you
can t walk, can’t remember, they can take your child, wall up
your lover. They can do anything you can’t blame them
from doing. How can you stop them? Alone, you can fight,
you can refuse, you can
take what revenge you can
but they roll over you.
But two people fighting back to back can cut through a mob, a snake-dancing file can break a cordon, an army can meet an army.
Two people can keep each other
sane, can give support, conviction,
love, massage, hope, sex.
Three people are a delegation,
a committee, a wedge. With four
you can play bridge and start
an organisation. With six
you can rent a whole house,
eat pie for dinner with no
seconds, and hold a fund raising party.
A dozen make a demonstration.
A hundred fill a hall.
A thousand have solidarity and your own newsletter; ten thousand, power and your own paper;
a hundred thousand, your own media;
ten million, your own country.
It goes on one at a time,
it starts when you care
to act, it starts when you do
it again after they said no,
it starts when you say We
and know who you mean, and each day you mean one more.
