“I have not resigned but for personal reasons have had to take a step back from the campaign.”
That’s Jim Murphy, Donald Trump’s national political director, as he stepped back from an active role in the campaign Thursday night. Now, it is possible that illness or a family situation forced Murphy’s withdrawal. But, given how challenging it must be to harness Trump into some kind of message discipline, let alone the difficulty of schooling him on world and national affairs, who could blame Murphy if what this really is, is a professional walking away to save himself. Rat, meet sinking ship. Trump has had – all campaign long – a yuuuge staff retention problem, particularly with the revolving door of campaign chiefs (with Kellyanne Conway of South Jersey left to preside over what will almost certainly be his defeat. Oh well, maybe there’s a job for her at Trump TV.
