Just going to pull this up top for a bit for anybody who missed our post late last night or missed the Commander-in-Chief Forum on NBC. It was the first town hall-style event of just Clinton and Trump; each had half an hour with Matt Lauer to answer questions that mostly on American foreign policy and military affairs. The audience, aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid was largely military veterans, some whom were invited.
Among them was Sue Fulton, the only questioner who got applause when she was introduced. Fulton’s an Army vet and one of the first women to graduate from West Point. A leading advocate for equality in the military – for women, for LGBTQ people and to open the U.S. military for transgender people to serve – Fulton’s bio is really impressive. And if you live in Monmouth County, you can vote for her. She’s your Democratic Freeholder candidate.
Fulton asked Trump if an undocumented person who wants to serve in the Armed Forced deserves to stay in this country legally. What stands out for me here is the response of this military audience when a lifelong fighter for inclusion was introduced, who then wet on to ask about including patriotic immigrants. This is a welcoming country, despite most of Donald Trump’s racist, sexist, backward-leaning invective.
