Meet the Candidate – Michael Cooke

As he explains in this interview, he’s not officially a candidate yet, but Toms River attorney Michael Cooke has formed an exploratory committee to consider running for the congressional seat currently occupied by freshman Tom MacArthur.

Whoever becomes the Democratic candidate in NJ-3 will have a formidable task. In the close-to-evenly split of this district which spans Burlington and Ocean Counties, multi-millionaire MacArthur spent $5 million – mostly his own money – to defeat popular Freeholder Aimee Belgard two years ago.

One other Democrat, Fred LaVergne of Delran, has also indicated interest in the seat. We have extended an invitation to LaVargne to do a similar interview with Blue Jersey.

I spoke with Cooke at the Vincentown Diner earlier today.

Disclosure: I am a member of the Burlington County Democratic Committee and will have a (somewhat limited) say in which candidate gets the party line. I have not yet made up my mind.

Hi Mr. Cooke, I understand you’re considering unseating TMac. I know you practice law in Toms River, but where do you live and for how long? Also, didn’t you say at one point that a Democrat couldn’t win in Ocean County? You believe that yet you’re still thinking about campaigning in Ocean County? Help me understand. Thank you.
