At the Take the PARCC Test last night in Delran – parents, very upset parents

Last night I went to an event hosted by Delran (Burlington County)’s teachers union to take a sample PARCC test like NJ kids will have to take. Marie Corfield will have a more detailed post in a few days. (I did live-tweet; scroll backwards for our coverage here).

I walked into the room, expecting maybe 25 teachers. There were 350 people there. And man, the ones who brought the energy and tough questions? Parents. The place was full of them.

Blue Jersey asked, How many of you are parents? Hands shot up.

On the jump page, tonight’s FREE screening (at AMC Hamilton 24 Cinemas, Hamilton) of the documentary Standardized, which is firing up many parents, and how you can get a ticket to the next Take the PARCC Test event (Dec. 10, Mercer County)

Last night in Delran Q & A time went on for nearly 2 hours. Part of the reason is that – like many schools that suffer massive tech breakdowns when the PARCC is administered) at least half the room had trouble getting on the website. But the toughest questions came from parents, which surprised me (many of them had seen Standardized and urged others to). And there were parents who’d opted their kids out, concerned the test – presented as mandatory – was both too stressful and unnecessary (it’s a huge moneymaker for its proprietary owner, education industry giant Pearson).

Marie will have more in a few days.

and they have poor instructions, potentially multiple correct answers, and annoying technology for measuring and other functions.

Give me a paper test any day.
