A week ago tonight, I was on my way to watch two good friends – NJ marriage equality case plaintiffs Marsha Shapiro and Louise Walpin – get married, impossible just a week before that. The wedding was in marriage equality sponsor Sen. Ray Lesniak’s home in Elizabeth, with about equal number of guests to reporters and photographers. Sen. Loretta Weinberg, his co-sponsor, gave the brides away, Steven Goldstein gave the blessing and Mayor Jamel Holley officiated. At the same time, weddings all over New Jersey, including in Lambertville where Mayor Dave DelVecchio married Councilwoman Beth Asaro to Joanne Schailey, and in Newark, Cory Booker – who declined to use his power to marry anybody until he could also marry gay couples – married 7 couples at City Hall overnight – both gay and straight. I was blissed out all week, nearly a wedding a day – my friends Wendy & Susan, and Betsy & Loretta in Hunterdon and my friends Ed Zipprich and JP Nicolaides in Red Bank (where Ed’s running for Assembly in LD11) and up in Hawthorne, Jeff Gardner (local Council candidate) married Ari. These are some of the pictures; mine and some pulled from jubilant Facebook postings. Enjoy.
