Mike Rice, Motherfucker, Is Fired

Via Star-Ledger, just now:

Mike Rice is out at Rutgers.

The university issued a release Wednesday morning saying that the third-year head coach has been relieved of his position at the men’s basketball coach.

“I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice,” Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti said in a statement. “Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community.”

Pernetti probably should be also, but won’t.  At least not now.

Statement by President Barchi Regarding Mike Rice – April 3, 2013

Rutgers University has a long and proud history as one of the nation’s most diverse and welcoming academic institutions. Coach Rice’s abusive language and actions are deeply offensive and egregiously violate the university’s core values.

When video excerpts of basketball practices were reviewed last fall by Athletic Director Tim Pernetti, he immediately notified me and sought the advice of internal and outside counsel.  The university hired an independent investigator to look into this matter thoroughly. Based on the external investigator’s findings and recommendations, Tim and I agreed that Coach Rice should be suspended, penalized $75,000 in fines and lost salary, ordered to undergo anger management counseling, and put on notice that his behavior would be closely monitored. Tim Pernetti also made it clear to Coach Rice that there would be zero tolerance for additional infractions. Tim kept me fully apprised and I supported his actions.

Yesterday, I personally reviewed the video evidence, which shows a chronic and pervasive pattern of disturbing behavior. I have now reached the conclusion that Coach Rice cannot continue to serve effectively in a position that demands the highest levels of leadership, responsibility and public accountability. He cannot continue to coach at Rutgers University.  Therefore, Tim Pernetti and I have jointly decided to terminate Mike Rice’s employment at Rutgers.

“I am responsible for thinking everyone would just forget about this and it would go away,” Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti said. “Back in December, that seemed possible. Judging from the national news these last couple of days, I was wrong. Please don’t fire me too.”

“Today’s decision, while months late, was the right thing to do.  There is simply no way Rutgers could have allowed Mr. Rice to continue in his position.

“That Mr. Rice had to go was clear.  But questions still remain as to why we are only now finding out about this and why the school’s athletic director initially defended his handling of the situation.  Were the student’s parents informed of what occurred?  Were they made aware that their kids were having basketballs thrown at their heads, being shoved around and being called disparaging names by someone in a position of authority? The very fact that Rutgers would subject these kids to this kind of behavior after the fact calls into question, yet again, what goes on in the athletic department over there.  The athletic director has many questions to answer and one has to wonder whether he should pick the new coach.”
