Senate President Steve Sweeney, referred to just minutes ago in Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg’s Blue Jersey post, has just taken himself off the list of Democrats considering running for the Democratic nomination for Governor.
After careful consideration and much deliberation, I will not be a candidate for governor in 2013. I’ve decided my work now needs to be focused on ensuring the Legislature remains in Democratic control. Is there any question about the havoc and pain a Republican Legislature would inflict on the middle class, labor, women, and our seniors? For over a decade New Jersey voters have ensured we have a strong Democratic majority in both houses and I view it as absolutely essential and my job to keep that streak going. We will.
Booker is out. Codey is out. Pascrell is reportedly still musing. Meanwhile, Sen. Barbara Buono has made her intentions clear, is already running a legitimate campaign, raising and picking up endorsements. It’s getting to be time for anybody still ruminating to decide whether they’re in or out; I hope Rep. Pascrell and anybody else still thinking hears that. Primaries are healthy, direction-defining things, and if we’re going to have one, let’s have at it. But if we’re not, I hope we know that soon, and then I hope we will see full-out support behind Sen. Buono. It’s time to launch our combined efforts against Gov. Christie’s styled-for-TV, but destructive, stewardship of New Jersey.
