Senate Democratic Leadership – Part 1

While the Republican-controlled House of Representatives takes an extended vacation, leaving several crucial fiscal issues on the table, here in New Jersey, our Democratically-controlled part-time legislature is hard at work. Today, I had the opportunity to sit down with the Senate Democratic leadership and discuss a number of issues.

Part 1 of this video includes the similarities and differences between Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Senate Majority Leader (and Blue Jersey contributor) Loretta Weinberg. We also discussed property taxes, marriage equality, hydraulic fracturing, government transparency, and the Port Authority.

In Part 2, to be posted tomorrow, we talk about halfway houses, health exchanges, the State Supreme Court, the Governor’s “Town Halls”, the “Jersey Comeback”, and the Jersey Girl Caucus.

10/5/12 update: Part 2 of the interview is here.

Like him or not Sweeney DOES listen to all sides of an argument. State Senator Weinberg clearly has both his ear and his respect.

This team HAS moderated the conservative initiatives of Christie. In a State where the Governor almost has the power of a King, these two have been very effective.

The video captures our Senate leaders providing intelligent, calm, concise statements on important issues, with little posturing and none of the  bluster, rudeness and ego we might get from someone whose name shall not be spoken.
